Thanks for opening today's Inside Streaming. There's no confirmation that it's true yet, but Netflix using AI generated images in a true crime documentary would certainly be a significant story, if it turns out to be accurate. The photos aren't meant to be incriminating, of course. They're just depictions of a convicted criminal's happy early life, meant to contrast the dark allegations against them. But still, it would be a manipulation. There's a clear and obvious baseline expectation that the materials we see and hear in a non-fiction documentary film are real and undoctored. Violating that trust, even for something "innocent" like a background image, goes over the line, and puts all of the other information in the film in question. I sincerely hope the report isn't true and it's just a weird-looking image for some other reason. Lon p/lon-harris | |
1 | A new report from Futurism suggests that a new Netflix true-crime documentary includes images that were manipulated using generative AI. Images that appear around 30 minutes into the film "What Jennifer Did" feature a number of telltale signs that AI apps were utilized, including misshapen faces and hands, unidentifiable objects in the background, and peculiar-looking teeth. More: - The images are used to depict Jennifer Pan's "bubbly, happy, confident, and very genuine personality," as attested to by a high school friend.
- Futurism reached out to Netflix for comment but has not heard back from the streamer.
- Pan was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for hiring an assassin to attack her family, resulting in the death of her mother.

More: - Whitfield has described the series as similar to "Succession," in that it takes a behind-the-scenes look at the world of the mega-rich.
- Bad Wolf is owned by Sony; the production company previously developed "Industry" for HBO, and co-founder Jane Tranter was an executive producer on "Succession."
- Alleged "serial swindler" Philbrick duped investors for more than $86 million by purchasing artwork and then selling it off to multiple individuals at once; the scam involved using artwork as loan collateral without informing its owners, falsifying documents, obtaining false identities, and other deceptions.
