Trials are set to start soon of MIT's Mirai algorithm, which can predict a patient's risk of developing breast cancer within five years. According to the Washington Post, Mirai can churn out risk scores for each patient who receives a mammogram and help detect cancer likelihood at higher rates than current methods. More: - Researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) developed the algorithm, which was trained on a dataset of 200,000 exams from Massachusetts General Hospital.
- Its predictive results were validated on additional datasets from Sweden's Karolinska Institute and Taiwan's Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.
- Using data of 129,000 mammograms from 62,000 patients in five countries, the system could predict which mammogram belonged to a patient who developed cancer within five years at an average accuracy of 76%.
- Unlike previous methods, the algorithm has shown "consistent performance" for patients of different races.
- The algorithm was developed by MIT professor Regina Barzilay, a breast cancer survivor, and colleagues. Their work will be explored further in an upcoming edition of Nature Medicine.
- In 2020, Barzilay won the $1M Squirrel AI Award for her work on machine learning models to develop drugs and diagnose breast cancer.

McDonald's is selling AI and technology firm Dynamic Yield to Mastercard for an undisclosed amount. Dynamic uses data and machine learning to help businesses tailor services and digital promotions to their customers. McDonald's will continue using its tech to recommend products, presumably at its drive-thrus and kiosks. More: - The company's SaaS platform takes into account factors like times of day and page views to make individualized product recommendations to customers in retail, banking, travel, and other industries.
- Mastercard said the acquisition will allow Dynamic to scale its technology to other businesses.
- The fast-food chain acquired Dynamic in 2019, integrating its suggestive and personalized ordering tech in drive-thrus and digital kiosks in North America, Australia, and the U.K.
- The deal is expected to close in H1 2022. At that time, current CTO Ori Bauer will take over as CEO.
- In 2019, McDonald's also acquired voice-automation company Apprente in a bid to bring conversational AI technology to its drive-thrus. Both acquisitions were part of the company's "digital transformation."

The FTC is reportedly looking into rules that would regulate how digital platforms use algorithms and data. Specifically, it's considering a rule to "curb lax security practices, limit [data] privacy abuses, and ensure that algorithmic decision-making does not result in unlawful discrimination," according to an Office of Management and Budget listing. More: - FTC Chair Lina Khan mentioned the possibility of establishing a rule in a recent letter to Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).
- Khan outlined goals to protect people from "from unfair or deceptive" practices online. She noted that it could result in "market-wide requirements" that tackle harms stemming from commercial surveillance and other more invasive data practices.
- Khan noted that the current method of "notice-and-consent" for tracking user data online has "serious shortcomings," as many people feel they have to consent to use apps and participate online.
- Section 18 of the FTC Act gives it authority to regulate "unfair or deceptive acts or practices." Reports noted the rulemaking remains in the very early stages.

Several Albertsons, Safeway, and Kroger stores are now testing Veeve's AI-powered shopping carts for cashier-less shopping. The technology is similar to Amazon's "Just Walk Out" tech but is embedded in the carts and doesn't rely on an app or storewide cameras. Veeve, a computer vision startup, says its solution could scale more quickly than Amazon's. More: - Veeve's carts have Android tablets and barcode scanners that are a "plug and play" solution for retailers.
- Its multiple cameras are embedded in the cart and take images of a product once it's scanned, creating a 3D model.
- This will enable Veeve's AI software to "learn" products and identify them with object recognition without needing a barcode.
- Veeve co-founder and CEO Shariq Siddiqui previously worked at Amazon for eight years, most recently as head of product for Amazon/Alexa Identity.
- Founded in 2018, the company has raised $4M to date. It's planning a Series A in the near future.
