| 1 | | Google DeepMind, its AI research lab, is developing a new chatbot called Gemini that could rival or surpass OpenAI's ChatGPT, according to CEO Demis Hassabis. Gemini, built on the capabilities of DeepMind's AlphaGo AI system, could analyze text, plan, and solve problems, Hassabis told Wired. More: - AlphaGo is DeepMind's AI system that defeated a professional human player in the board game of Go.
- Gemini aims to combine the strengths of AlphaGo's decision-making with advanced language capabilities.
- The large-scale, text-based language model is expected to leverage innovations in reinforcement learning, a technique that rewards or punishes AI systems to teach them desired behaviors.
- Gemini is still months away from an official launch. It's expected to cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars for its development.
Zoom out: - Although DeepMind previously introduced Sparrow, a dialogue agent focused on safe and appropriate responses, Gemini is the lab's most ambitious project in the space.
- Previously, Hassabis said DeepMind might release Sparrow for a private beta sometime this year.
- Separately, Google released its own AI chatbot, Bard, in March.

| 2 | | What happened: While generative AI tools like ChatGPT are raising job loss concerns, nearly 65% of C-suite leaders in an Upwork survey said they actually plan to increase hiring due to the technology. Details: Upwork hired the independent research firm ClearlyRated to poll 1,400 U.S. business leaders across industries on their use of generative AI. What the numbers say: Nearly 50% of business leaders say they will hire more freelancers and full-time employees as a result of generative AI. A disconnect also exists between the C-suite and their leadership team about the technology's adoption. While 73% of C-suite executives embrace it, the percentages are lower among VPs, directors, and senior managers. The results also showed that 68% of full-time remote companies actively embrace generative AI, while only 53% of office-based companies do so. The takeaway: While tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 Copilot can enhance worker efficiency and productivity, they still have limitations in fully automating human jobs and tasks. "You can't really automate the entire job or task because of this tool," according to Kelly Monahan, managing director of Upwork's research institute. | | |

| 3 | | U.S. House members have been told to restrict their use of ChatGPT to only the paid version with privacy settings enabled, Axios reported. No other large language models are currently authorized for use, according to a memo from House Chief Administrative Officer Catherine Szpindor. More: - The Committee on House Administration has provisionally approved ChatGPT Plus for use under certain conditions.
- ChatGPT Plus offers built-in privacy features that are "necessary for House data," Szpindor wrote in the notice.
- Additionally, she told House members that they could only use ChatGPT for publicly accessible and non-sensitive data and "research and evaluation" rather than everyday use.
- To better ensure privacy, the memo informs lawmakers not to paste any blocks of text in the chat interface that weren't already made public.
Zoom out: - According to a new report by cybersecurity firm Group-IB, over 100,000 login credentials for OpenAI's ChatGPT were leaked on the dark web.
- The credential theft started a year ago but peaked with nearly 27,000 stolen logins last month.
