Digital Planet, a team at Tufts University's Fletcher School, compiled a list of the top 50 cities for AI talent and compared them based on diversity and other factors. The researchers say the framework could help companies build broader and more diverse AI workforces. More: - Pursuing ethical AI requires a "diverse workforce that brings a broad range of perspectives," according to Harvard Business Review.
- But only 17% of the AI talent pool are women vs. 27% overall in STEM. Only 11.8% of the AI workforce is Black.
- Meanwhile, AI R&D is limited to only a handful of geographies, most notably Silicon Valley, which claims around 25% of all AI papers, companies, and patents.
- As a result, Digital Planet highlighted the 50 cities worldwide with the biggest AI talent pools. It analyzed them using the "TIDE" framework, which stands for "Talent pool; Investments; Diversity of talent; Evolution of the country's digital foundations."
- The analysis could help companies better configure how they source talent and even open hubs elsewhere.
- Here are the top AI cities as measured by TIDE (click on the link to view the full list).

The AI Researchers Portal is hosted on AI.gov. More: - The service also has a directory of the government's active AI research projects that are open to collaborations.
- The portal, a program within the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy, is expected to cut down on the time researchers use to find these resources.
- It's one of many tools the government is using to advance the country's AI R&D leadership, the first goal under the National AI Initiative, said Lynne Parker, director of the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Office.
- AI.gov is home to the initiative, a federal law that lays out plans for AI research and applications.

The EU's antitrust regulator cleared Microsoft's planned acquisition of AI and speech tech firm Nuance Communications. Microsoft reportedly wants to use Nuance's tech — which includes the transcription tool Dragon — in its healthcare cloud products. More: - European Commission regulators found that the acquisition doesn't raise any competition concerns in the EU for cloud services, transcription software, cloud services, PC operating systems, and more.
- After an analysis, it concluded that Microsoft and Nuance sell "very different products," and the combined company will face "strong" competition.
- The deal has already gained approval from regulators in the U.S. and Australia. The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority is still investigating and accepting public comments through Jan. 10, pushing back the deal's possible closure date into 2022.
- The $19.7B purchase, including debt coverage, is Microsoft's second-largest after its $26.2B LinkedIn purchase in 2016.

- Reaching L4 and L5 is not just about the vehicles but the entire tech infrastructure and ecosystem, said Kneron founder and CEO Albert Liu.
- San Diego- and Taipei-based Kneron unveiled its KL530 AI chip in November, targeting the autonomous vehicle edge computing market.

Instacart is exploring a partnership with Tortoise and WorkWhile to make grocery deliveries using sidewalk robots. Instacart wants to pursue last-mile delivery through bots as the market for ultrafast grocery delivery solutions heats up.
