Oracle announced plans to acquire electronic medical records firm Cerner for $95 per share, or ~$28.3B in equity value. - News of a potential Cerner takeover surfaced earlier this year, with experts citing Oracle as well as Microsoft and Google as potential buyers.
- Austin-based Oracle, which bills itself as a "cloud technology company," has a market value of $260B+.

Apple is asking India's Competition Commission to toss out an antitrust case targeting its in-app purchase system and commissions. In a new filing, Apple argued that its impact in India is insignificant as it only claims from 0% to 5% of the total market. More: - The Competition Commission is looking into allegations that Apple damages competition by forcing app developers to use its system, which charges a commission on in-app purchases.
- In India, Google's Android commands the highest market share at 90-100% of smartphones. Apple has argued that "without dominance, there can be no abuse."
- The company also claims that its commissions are “not unfair or excessive," stating that only a small percentage of developers, many of whom are working for large conglomerates, pay the highest rate of 30%.
- The Indian commission is evaluating Apple's filing and will decide whether to dismiss it or launch a wider investigation.
- Apple has faced antitrust probes in the U.S., South Korea, Europe, and elsewhere.

Amazon said it no longer plans to ban employees from checking their personal phones at warehouses. The company continues to face scrutiny after six of its employees were killed when an Amazon fulfillment center in Edwardsville, Illinois, was struck by a tornado earlier this month. Employees said they need access to real-time information and communication with authorities in case of emergencies. More: - Amazon had planned to reinstate a years-long rule banning phones on warehouse floors this January.
- But last week, it told employees they can bring their phones to work "until further notice."
- Members of Congress have sent a letter to the company asking if its policies may have played a role in the tragedy, claiming the incident "fit a larger pattern" in how the company treats its employees.
- OSHA is now investigating the warehouse collapse, which occurred on Dec. 10. The 700,000-square-foot facility, just east of St. Louis, was destroyed following the extreme weather event, which claimed the lives of 58 people across the Midwest.

SenseTime has relaunched its Hong Kong IPO after the U.S. added the Chinese AI company to a blacklist over its links to China's mistreatment of Muslim Uyghurs. The startup said it will issue 1.5 billion shares at between HK$3.85 and HK$3.99 each, giving it a top-end valuation of HK$132.8B ($17B). More: - SenseTime specializes in facial recognition and other advanced technologies. It sells software to governments and businesses for use in surveillance, autonomous driving, and smart cities.
- Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury Department added SenseTime to its investment blacklist, prohibiting U.S. citizens from investing in the company.
- Shortly after, SenseTime postponed the pricing of its stock offering, which was due to take place on Friday.
- The company has reopened orders as of today. Its shares are set to begin trading on the Hong Kong exchange on Dec. 30.
- It has already secured about $512M from "cornerstone investors" including the state-owned Shanghai Xuhui Capital Investment.
- In adding it to the blacklist, the Treasury cited SenseTime's alleged role in providing facial-recognition technology that has furthered China's surveillance and suppression of mostly Muslim Uyghurs in its Xinjiang region.
