Scammers are using a deepfake video of Elon Musk to trick users into signing up for a fake platform. The scammers are promoting 30% returns on deposits. More: - The deepfake video claims that Musk owns a BitVex trading platform. Besides Musk, the scammers are using the figures of Cathie Wood, Brad Garlinghouse, Michael Saylor, and Charles Hoskinson as fake supporters of the platform.
- These videos draw from real interviews that Elon Musk has had and use voiceovers to make it look as if Musk is supportive of the platform. The videos are in English and Arabic and are predominantly uploaded on YouTube and various illegal websites that host movies and music.
- To use the BitVex platform, users must register an account at bitvex(.)org or bitvex(.)net to access the investment platform. Once a user logs in, the site will display a dashboard where you can deposit various cryptocurrencies, select an investment plan, or withdraw your earnings.
- The fake withdrawals are created through JavaScript, randomly selecting one of five different cryptocurrencies (Cardano, Ethereum, Bitcoin, Ripple, or Binance Coin) and randomly generating withdrawal amounts, changing every time the page is refreshed. The scam has managed to steal around $1,700 so far.
Zoom Out: - Crypto scams are becoming more common recently. In Jan. 2021, a fake Elon Musk crypto giveaway scam managed to steal $580,000 in one week.
- An Ark Invest-themed scam promoted on YouTube stole $1.3M by re-streaming an edited version of a previously held panel discussion on cryptocurrency with Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, and Cathie Wood.
- The FTC released a report stating that $80M has been stolen by cryptocurrency investment scammers since Oct. 2020.

Lincoln College officially ended its operations after 157 years due to a cyberattack. The Illinois college had its fundraising campaign hacked. More: - Founded in 1865, the college survived the 1918 influenza pandemic, multiple recessions, and two world wars.
- Lincoln College had a record number of admissions in 2019, but after the pandemic, its admission numbers dropped, which led the college to make investments in its technology. In Dec. 2021, hackers believed to be located in Iran managed to penetrate the school's fundraising campaign data, halting its entire access to funds for three months.
- According to Lincoln's president, David Gerlach, the school paid $100,000 in ransom, but after getting its data back, low admission numbers meant they had to close all operations after 157 years.
- Lincoln College was a predominantly Black college and qualified for federal recognition as a PBI.

A bug in PayPal could allow threat actors to steal money from user accounts. The flaw has been found by a security researcher. More: - The researcher claims that hackers could use clickjacking as a method to lead users toward clicking buttons that can download malware on their devices.
- Clickjacking is a method used to trick users into clicking buttons that seem normal but are actually created by the hacker, usually as an HTML file, with the purpose of re-directing their information to the hacker's own page.
- The "Billing Agreements" section in PayPal should accept only billingAgreementToken, but during testing, it was found that another token type can be passed, which leads to stealing money from a victim's PayPal account.
- This attack could have consequences on other websites that integrate with PayPal for checkouts, enabling the malicious actor to withdraw large amounts of money from users' PayPal accounts.

Chinese hackers breached Russian and Belarusian defense institutions. The hackers used the breach to spy on the daily activity of the organizations. More: - The research institutions work in developing highly technological defense solutions, while the method used to breach the victims was spear-phishing emails that contained malware, spread through files that misled the users to think they were opening classified information.
- This institution belongs to a holding company within the Russian state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec Corporation, Russia’s largest holding company in the radio-electronics industry and military-technology development.
- The hacking campaign was attributed to a Chinese threat actor with connections to Stone Panda (also known as APT10), a nation-state-backed actor, and Mustang Panda, a China-based cyber espionage threat actor. This operation is thought to have started in June 2021 and may be ongoing.
- These hacker groups used new tools that have not previously been described. They include a sophisticated multi-layered loader and a backdoor dubbed SPINNER. These tools are in development since at least March 2021 and use techniques such as multi-layer in-memory loaders and compiler-level obfuscations.
