Google fired one of its AI researcher, Satrajit Chatterjee, after he disputed parts of a research paper on AI, according to The New York Times. As an employee at the Google Brain AI research group, Chatterjee was among the researchers to challenge some of the paper's claims in a rebuttal. More: - The original paper, published on April 13, 2021, in the journal Nature, introduced an AI method for automatically generating elements of a computer chip.
- Researchers claimed the method was more efficient and faster at designing chip parts than a person
- But Chatterjee and other researchers challenged some of the paper's claims in a rebuttal, including questioning if the model had been tested enough.
- They submitted the rebuttal for publication, but it was ultimately rejected by a resolution committee.
- Google said it "stands by" the paper, which it says was peer-reviewed, and investigated the technical claims in the rebuttal, but they "did not meet our standards for publication."
Zoom-out: - In late 2020, Google fired former co-leader of its Ethical AI team, Timnit Gebru, after she and colleagues published a research paper outlining potential issues with large AI language models, such as those developed by Google and other tech giants.
- The company later fired Margaret Mitchell, co-lead of the AI team, after she criticized how Google handled Gebru's departure and reportedly accessed confidential business-sensitive documents.

Mayo Clinic researchers developed an AI algorithm that uses Apple Watch electrocardiogram data to detect a weak heart pump in patients. The issue, also known as left ventricular dysfunction, affects about 2-3% of the world's population but can have no symptoms. More: - The study involved 2,454 Mayo Clinic patients with an iPhone and an Apple Watch with ECG basic one-lead functionality.
- Researchers passed data on 125,610 ECGs through an algorithm, which they created using a 12-lead ECG machine that detects weak heart muscles.
- When paired with the algorithm, the watch data met or exceeded treadmill testing at identifying a weak heart pump.
- The research was shared at the Heart Rhythm Society conference in San Francisco. Mayo is now working on a study involving 1 million people to test different heart function algorithms, with a goal of detecting heart disease in patients earlier.
- Mayo Clinic funded the study, which did not involve financial or technical support from Apple.
