According to a draft majority opinion obtained by Politico, the U.S. Supreme Court is making preparations to overturn Roe v. Wade, a decision that would allow states to severely restrict abortion rights. The 93-page majority opinion draft authored by Justice Samuel Alito in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case purportedly shows that the conservative majority at the Supreme Court is poised to end federal protection of abortion rights. More: - Several media outlets stressed that the leaked document is labeled as a "draft" opinion, meaning that justices could potentially change their votes since they are not expected to issue a ruling until late June or early July.
- As well as Roe v. Wade, justices seem poised to overturn the Planned Parenthood v. Casey 1992 decision that largely upheld the right to abortion, the document suggests.
- The opinion concludes that "the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Roe and Casey must be overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives."
- Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, Amy Coney Barrett, and Neil Gorsuch — all of whom were appointed by Republican presidents — also endorsed the majority opinion, an unnamed source told Politico.
- While there is some historical precedent, it is extraordinarily rare for a Supreme Court opinion draft — which might typically be circulated among a handful of legal clerks and others close to the Supreme Court — to be leaked to the press.

A unionization vote at an Amazon warehouse in New York failed on Monday, just weeks after workers at a nearby facility voted to create the first Amazon union in the U.S. Plans to join the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) were rejected in a 618-380 vote, meaning that just over two-thirds of the ~1,600 workers eligible to vote casted ballots. More: - Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spoke to workers at the LDJ5 sorting center in Staten Island last week ahead of the union election.
- In late March, Amazon employees at the nearby JFK8 warehouse facility voted to form the ALU, with 55% of the votes in favor of the unionization drive.
- Amazon has filed a challenge to overturn the results of that election, alleging that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) "failed to protect the integrity and neutrality of its procedures" by turning away voters and allowing union representatives and media to stay too close to the voting site.
- If either Amazon or the ALU want to challenge the results of the latest election, they have until Monday to file complaints with the NLRB.

The Italian government unveiled policies to reduce the burden of rising energy costs. The €14B ($14.7B) program will be combined with €15B ($15.8B) in federal spending that has been announced in recent months to help Italians cope with rising fuel costs. More: - The package, which has been approved by decree, also includes €200 in stimulus checks for low- and middle-class Italians.
- ~€6B of funding for the policies will come from taxing the "extra" profits of energy firms.
- Economy Minister Daniele Franco said the current 10% one-off tax on energy and fossil fuel companies will be raised to 25%.
- The Italian government expects to collect €10B from this windfall tax in 2022.
- The government also plans to extend an existing fuel tax cut until July and plans to offer grants and state guarantees on bank loans to firms negatively impacted by sanctions on Russia.

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), a long-awaited accelerator capable of producing rare isotopes for study by nuclear physicists, was officially opened on Monday. The first-of-its-kind accelerator will allow nuclear physicists to conduct experiments that were previously impossible. More: - FRIB is located on the Michigan State University Campus in East Lansing, Michigan.
- The 450-meter accelerator snakes through the facility's basement, producing isotopes that can be sent throughout the lab into experimental chambers.
- FRIB has a second accelerator that can smash rare isotopes in a way that can simulate the high-energy collisions that take place within stars or supernovas.
- According to experimental nuclear physicist Ani Aprahamian, the facility is "the realization of a dream of the whole community in nuclear physics."
- Most of the funding needed to build the $942M facility came from the U.S. Department of Energy.
Zoom Out: - The facility will allow for unprecedented experiments and exploration into the world of isotopes.
- Similar accelerators are in operation in Japan and Russia, and the atom-smashing Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Germany is scheduled to be completed in 2027.
