President Biden with Janet Yellen and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell in the Oval Office on May 31, 2022. | Associated Press/Evan Vucci During a CNN appearance, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen admitted she was wrong in 2021 about the path inflation would take. Yellen said there have been unanticipated and significant shocks to the economy that have boosted energy and food prices and created supply chain bottlenecks that have impacted the U.S. economy in ways that, at the time, she did not fully understand. More: - Last year, Yellen and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said inflation was transitory and primarily due to the economy returning to normal following the COVID-19 pandemic.
- In March, consumer prices jumped by an 8.5% annual rate and eased slightly to 8.3% in April, well above the 2% target.
- In an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal on Monday, President Biden stressed his administration and the Fed are working to tackle inflation.
- Last month, the Fed announced a 0.50% interest rate hike and plans to start reducing its $9T balance sheet in June.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon | Bloomberg via Getty Images During an appearance at a financial conference in New York, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned that an economic hurricane is on the horizon. He said the bank is bracing itself and being very conservative with its balance sheet. He urged analysts and investors at the conference to do the same. More: - Dimon pointed to the Fed’s quantitative tightening (QT) plan, which begins this month, as one of the sources of his concern.
- Starting June 1, the Fed will roll off $47.5B per month from its $9T balance sheet for the next three months – $30B in Treasuries and $17.5B in MBS.
- Starting in September, the amount would go up to $95B a month, $60B in Treasuries, and $35B in MBS.
- Dimon said the U.S. has never seen QT like this and added history books could be written about this for the next 50 years.
- Dimon also pointed to the ongoing war in Ukraine as a source of concern due to its impact on oil and food prices.
- Dimon said oil prices could potentially hit $150 or $175 a barrel.
