Jans Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of NATO, stated that knowing exactly when the war in Ukraine will end is difficult, but the West must prepare for the possibility that it could last years. Stoltenberg said that while the war's cost is high, the consequences would be dire if Russia were to win the war. More: - Stoltenberg expressed his view that to best help Ukraine, the West must continue supplying its army with modern weapons. This could be especially vital in the eastern Donbas region, an area that is controlled by Russia.
- The head of NATO claimed that supporting Ukraine would outweigh the current risks posed to the West by the energy and food price crises.
- This change in tone is in line with NATO's new strategy, which has gone from considering Russia a partner to an immediate threat. This strategy will be further discussed later this year with NATO allies and is thought to include China as well, signaling that NATO is preparing for different global scenarios.
- These views match statements by U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who stated that the key to winning this war is that the West must supply Ukraine with weapons faster than Russia can organize its army.
- This sentiment has been publicly stated by Ukraine for a long time. Recently, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov pleaded for the West to provide his country with all of the weapons that it has asked for, especially heavy artillery.

French parliamentary elections are currently being held as President Emmanuel Macron appears unlikely to win a majority in order to govern without external partners and coalitions. If Macron doesn't gain a parliament majority, he would be the first President to fail to do so in recent decades. More: - France held its presidential elections in April in a race that was considered one of the most influential elections in recent memory.
- Macron managed to beat Marine Le Pen in a win that was considered key for Europe's hope of a united EU front.
- Macron needs to win 289 seats to have a majority.
- As of 6 p.m. EDT, Macron's centrist coalition was on track to win between 205 and 250 seats. This would give his party more seats than any other, but not enough for a majority of all seats.
- Turnout is higher than in the previous parliamentary election in 2017.
- Regardless of Le Pen's loss in the presidential election, the far-right is expected to have its best result ever during this election, proving that the growth of Le Pen's movement is an ongoing trend rather than a fluke. The left-leaning parties, the greens, and conservatives will find themselves potentially in a position to either be the largest opposition group or join Macron in the government and influence policy.
- Macron's challenges from April have only increased, as inflation has made fuel and food more expensive. While the presidential elections may have been more about ideology, during parliamentary elections, voters are more focused on daily issues.

A group of Apple employees in Maryland have unionized, marking the first time in the history of the company that any of its retail employees have done so. The employees voted in favor of joining by a two-to-one majority. The decision could influence other Apple employee groups throughout the U.S. More: - The workers, located in Towson, stated that their vote does not have to do anything with them hating their job but with them wanting to have a say in the factors that affect them on a daily basis.
- The total vote count was 65-33 in favor of joining the union, known as AppleCore (Apple Coalition of Organized Retail Employees).
- By doing so, they've joined an increasingly larger group of employees in the tech sector who are starting to unionize. In just the last few months, Starbucks and Amazon have seen employees vote for unionizing, events that have caused tensions among the company management and its employees. Some union representatives have even held meetings in the White House.
- Apple employees in Towson have demanded that the company improve its pay, its work-life balance policy, and paid leave. Apple raised its pay for retail employees from $20 to $22 per hour last month, but questions remain on whether the company is willing to negotiate with its employees over other conditions, as the debate on the company's remote work culture has recently shown.
- Union leaders have stated that workers at dozens of Apple stores have expressed their desire to unionize.

Good News: A startup in Italy claims to have successfully created and launched a long-duration storage battery that costs 50% less than a lithium-ion battery of the same capacity. The company uses technology that utilizes carbon dioxide to store renewable energy. More: - The company, called Energy Dome, launched in 2020. Initially building a prototype in its base in Sardinia, the startup now claims it has built a product that has the capacity to store megawatts of energy.
- Energy Dome stated that its batteries can be deployed rapidly to its customers worldwide and that they can utilize their technology with materials such as carbon dioxide, water, and steel, making them easy to use. The startup expects its products to be deployed by the end of 2023.
- The process through which the company has built its technology is called thermodynamic CO2 transformation. CO2 is captured and then held in a liquid state. When the CO2 needs to be deployed, it is vaporized and put back in the machinery that the company has built.
- Energy Dome has turned the reputation it built from being features on Bloomberg's list of energy pioneers for 2022 into clients, managing to sign deals to build energy storage batteries in Italy, Germany, the Middle East, and Africa.

The CEOs of the major U.S. airlines and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will meet to discuss the flight disruptions that are occurring in the airline industry. This industry has been affected by the supply-chain crisis and the rise in living costs, as companies have struggled with staff shortages. More: - The war in Ukraine, along with other economic factors, has caused higher fuel and food prices. While consumers have generally returned to normal traveling patterns after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, the rising cost of living has affected airline companies in their ability to hire staff.
- Buttigieg stated that the federal government has the power to take action and improve the situation with the large number of canceled flights that occurred in the U.S. during Memorial Day weekend.
- Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Ed Markey sent letters to address the issue, to which airlines responded by saying that the industry has been affected in ways unlike other industries and that they are working on training their staff to meet the surging demand.
- Nearly 2,800 flights were canceled on Memorial Day weekend.
