Reddit plans to acquire Spell, a platform to run experiments on machine learning algorithms, for an undisclosed amount. The purchase is expected to help Reddit improve its spam detection and algorithm matching and surface more relevant posts for users. More: - Former Facebook engineer Serkan Piantino founded Spell in 2016 as a cloud computing solution for running resource-intensive ML experiments without the needed hardware.
- Reddit says acquiring the MLOps platform will help it more quickly integrate machine learning across its safety, products, and advertising teams.
- In addition, some Spell team members will transition to Reddit and work on AI projects that may help determine how Reddit "customizes ad placements, defines contextual relevance, and keeps its communities safe."
- During the acquisition process, Spell will no longer accept new commercial customers.
- The startup has raised at least $15M in funding to date.

The IRS said it's now using an AI-enabled phone bot to help set up payment plans for individuals with delinquent taxes. The Automated Collection System (ACS) and Accounts Management toll-free lines are designed to free up IRS call center employees for more difficult requests and tasks. More: - People who are behind on their taxes and received a mailed notice can now call the AI-powered system to set up a payment plan if they owe less than $25,000.
- The 24/7 system verifies a person's identity by asking for basic information and a number on the notice.
- "The idea is to free up more of our human assisters to interact with taxpayers who need to talk to us about much more complex issues," said Darren Guillot, IRS Deputy Commissioner of Small Business/Self Employed Collection & Operations Support.
- The bots will later automatically generate transcripts and account balances for taxpayers.
- The IRS previously started using bots to assist taxpayers who don't need to verify their identities. Those bots, which answer basic questions, have fielded over 3 million calls in the past several months.
