The gunman who killed four people on Wednesday at a medical building in Tulsa, Oklahoma purchased the AR-15-style weapon used in the shooting less than three hours earlier and targeted a doctor who had recently performed a back operation on him, police said. The shooter, who also shot and killed himself at the Natalie Medical Building on the Saint Francis Hospital campus, carried a note saying he had planned to kill Dr. Preston Phillips and any others who stood in his way. More: - Following the back surgery on May 19, the gunman contacted Phillips complaining of pain and asking for additional treatment. The final call to Phillips' office came only hours before the shooting.
- The AR-15-style gun was purchased at a gun store at 2 p.m. and the first 9-1-1 calls from the facility came before 5 p.m.
- Police recovered the assault-style weapon as well as a semiautomatic pistol from the scene.
Zoom out: - The Tulsa incident is the 20th U.S. mass shooting since the massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, last week, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
- The database defines "mass shooting" as any incident where at least four people are shot, not including the shooter.
- It is the fourth mass shooting involving at least four fatalities in the U.S. in the last month.
- The House Judiciary Committee is advancing gun legislation that would raise the legal age to purchase an assault weapon from 18 to 21 and place limits on large-capacity magazines.
- President Biden is delivering remarks at 7:30 p.m. ET tonight on the recent spate of mass shootings.

Russia now controls nearly 20% of Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday in a speech to Luxembourg's parliament. Most of Severodonetsk, a city in eastern Ukraine, is under Russian control, and Ukrainian forces are slowly losing ground in the area. Even so, Ukrainian forces have retaken 20 small towns and villages in Ukraine's south, as a counteroffensive seeks to hinder Russian forces that Moscow would prefer be focused on its campaign in the east. Olena Zelenska, Ukraine's First Lady, asked the American people not to "get used to our pain" or "get used to this war," as the invasion closes in on its 100th day. More: | |

COVID-19 cases in the U.S. could be 30 times higher than official case counts show, according to a new survey. The study preprint, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, suggests that 1.5 million New York City residents got COVID-19 between April 23 and May 8, significantly higher than the officially recorded 49,253. The study's authors suggest that representative surveys could help other U.S. cities determine the true burden of COVID-19 in their communities now that most infected people do not get tested and their results are not publicly counted. More: - The study's authors suggested undercounting could be an even greater problem outside of New York City, which has relatively easy access to testing.
- More than half of the individuals surveyed were unfamiliar with Paxlovid, an antiviral medication that is highly effective against hospitalization and severe illness in high-risk patients.
- Because of the prevalence of at-home tests and the decreased risk of severe outcomes (due to prior infection and vaccination), experts have suspected that the current level of circulating coronavirus is much higher than official reports, though researchers disagree by how much.
- Though hospitalizations have seen a modest rise over the last several weeks, they remain at lower levels than in previous surges.
- Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1, thought to be the most infectious version of the virus yet, is the dominant form of coronavirus circulating in the U.S.

GOOD NEWS: A 20-year-old man reconnected with his birth mother late last year, leading them to realize that they both often worked in the same hospital. Benjamin Hulleberg was put up for adoption by Holly Shearer 20 years ago, after she gave birth at the age of 16. After finding Hulleberg on Facebook, she wished him a happy birthday in November 2021, and said "20 years ago I made the hardest decision of my life and placed my beautiful little baby up for adoption with a beautiful family." The two agreed to meet immediately, with their families, and realized they had both been working at HCA Healthcare's St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City for the last two years. Shearer is a medical assistant and Hulleberg volunteers in the NICU. More: - "We parked in the same garage, could have been on the same floor, had no idea that we were so close," Shearer said.
- Since reconnecting in November, the pair now meet up at least once a week. Hulleberg has also since become acquainted with his younger half-brother and half-sister.

Attorney Michael Avenatti was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for defrauding his one-time client Stormy Daniels. Avenatti was convicted in February of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for embezzling $300,000 in book proceeds that should have been given to Daniels. Avenatti was already in prison, serving a previous 2.5-year sentence after he was convicted in 2020 of trying to extort $20M from Nike. More: - Eighteen months of his new sentence will run concurrent with the Nike sentence. He will likely serve close to five years total in prison.
- Judge Jesse M. Furman said Avenatti's crime, pocketing $300,000 of Daniels' advance on "Full Disclosure," a memoir, was "craven and egregious" and made "out of desperation."
- Avenatti represented Daniels as she tried to get out of a non-disclosure agreement where she agreed to keep quiet about an alleged affair she had with Donald Trump.
- Avenatti said the contract was void as Trump never signed it, even though Trump reportedly directed his lawyer Michael Cohen to pay Daniels $130,000.
- Avenatti did not appear in court but lawyers said he recently wrote a letter to Daniels apologizing.

Britain began celebrating its Platinum Jubilee on Thursday to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne. Elizabeth appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony to greet tens of thousands who came to join the celebration. The Platinum Jubilee kicked off with a military parade called "Trooping the Color," which celebrates the queen's birthday. Elizabeth will not attend a planned Friday service at St. Paul's cathedral after experiencing discomfort during the parade. More: - Elizabeth officially marked 70 years on the British throne on Feb. 6 and she turned 96 years old on April 21.
- The Platinum Jubilee typically commemorates 70 years of reign by a single monarch. Few monarchs ever achieve such a distinction; Elizabeth joins Louis XIV of France, Johann II of Liechtenstein, and Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, who died shortly after his own Platinum Jubilee in 2016.
- The four-day celebration will include street parties, a pageant with thousands of performers, and a Saturday concert featuring Alicia Keys, Duran Duran, and Diana Ross.
