Northwestern University's MacArthur Justice Center has sued the city of Chicago and police over their use of an AI gunfire detection system. The lawsuit claims the ShotSpotter system has resulted in "grave and systematic" rights violations, including the false arrests of Daniel Ortiz and Michael Williams. More: - ShotSpotter says its uses AI, algorithms, and sensors to classify sounds from audio recordings as gunfire and alert police to the location.
- However, a prior AP investigation found flaws in the AI gunfire detection system, including its potential to misclassify fireworks and other sounds as gunshots or miss live gunfire altogether.
- Williams, for example, was accused of fatally shooting a man in his vehicle based on a ShotSpotter alert. He was jailed for almost a year before a judge dismissed his case for insufficient evidence.
- The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Ortiz and Williams, seeks to end ShotSpotter's use in Chicago. It alleges that the system "inflates gunfire statistics," leading to oppressive surveillance and police tactics in Chicago.
Zoom-out: - ShotSpotter, which was not named as a defendant in the suit, says its AI system has a 97% aggregate accuracy rate for real-time gunfire detection and maps historical data on homicides and shootings.
- Previously, a MacArthur Project report found that nearly 90% of ShotSpotter alerts lacked on-site evidence. The system allegedly generated 40,000+ dead-end police deployments over 21 months in Chicago.

Google has fired a software engineer who previously claimed that the company's LaMDA AI chatbot model is sentient. Blake Lemoine was placed on paid administrative leave in June after Google said he improperly shared confidential information about the AI project with outside parties. More: - Lemoine, a member of Google's Responsible AI organization, said he began chatting with Google's Language Model for Dialogue Applications or LaMDA last fall.
- The engineer made headlines when he claimed that the AI system is a sentient person with rights and its own thoughts and feelings. Google quickly dismissed the claims, saying they were "wholly unfounded" and Lemoine had anthropomorphized the technology.
- Google has now confirmed that it fired Lemoine. The company claims it engaged with Lemoine for months but he still chose to "persistently violate" its employment and data security policies regarding product information.
- First announced in May 2021, LaMDA is built on the Transformer neural network architecture developed at Google. It's trained specifically on dialogue, making its more capable than other models at free-flowing, sensible, and specific conversation.
- Google says it has formally reviewed LaMDA 11 times. "We will continue our careful development of language models," it said.
