Meta Platforms will pay $725M to settle a lawsuit alleging that Facebook illegally shared data with Cambridge Analytica and other third parties. It is believed to be the biggest settlement in a U.S. data privacy class action suit. More: - The lawsuit was filed in 2018 by a group of Facebook users. It alleges that Meta's Facebook violated consumer privacy laws when it shared user data with the now-defunct Cambridge Analytica and others.
- They claim that the British data analytics firm developed a Facebook app that illegally harvested the personal data of users, which was shared without their consent.
- It was later found that Cambridge Analytica used private data from as many as 87 million users to target voters with advertising for then-presidential candidate Donald Trump ahead of the 2016 election.
- The disclosure triggered an FTC investigation that resulted in Facebook's record-breaking $5B settlement in 2019. The company also agreed to pay fines in the U.S. and U.K.
Zoom-out: - Up to 280 million people may be eligible for payments in the proposed settlement, which still requires a judge's approval.
- In a statement, Meta said it had revamped its data-sharing practices and approach to privacy following the 2018 controversy. It says it now longer allows third parties to access such user data.

- Additionally, a general decline in demand for Tesla vehicles, including in China, recently prompted the company to raise discounts on its electric vehicles.
- Still, many Chinese automakers are known to pause production during the Lunar New Year holiday, and Tesla has amassed enough inventory to fulfill its orders for a while, sources told the WSJ.
- According to an internal company schedule, Tesla plans to halt vehicle output in Shanghai from Jan. 20 to Jan. 31 for the Chinese New Year.

Both chambers of Congress passed a $1.7T government spending bill, which includes a clause banning federal employees from using TikTok on government-owned devices. The bill, approved by the Senate last Thursday and the House on Friday, still requires the signature of President Joe Biden to become law. More: - The measure specifically bars executive branch members from using TikTok or others apps created by its owner, China-based ByteDance, due to national security concerns.
- Federal employees cannot download TikTok or access the app via government-issued devices or networks.
- It offers exceptions for employees in law enforcement, national security, and research areas.
- In response, TikTok called the move a "political gesture" that does nothing to address national security concerns.
- The company has been working on an agreement with the Biden administration to tackle those concerns, which is now under review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S.
Zoom-out: - Meanwhile, a new report from The Wall Street Journal said some Biden administration officials are placing pressure on TikTok to sell its U.S. operations.
- The officials are concerned that ByteDance is providing U.S. user data to the Chinese government and influencing popular opinion via TikTok content.
- Recently, Tiktok admitted that it used its app to spy on journalists to uncover insider sources of leaks. The company later fired four staff members for improperly accessing data.

A biometric capture device sold on eBay contained sensitive U.S. military data on more than 2,600 individuals, according to The New York Times. The device was sold to a European hacker organization, which uncovered names, iris scans, fingerprints, and photos of individuals in the device's memory card. More: - The organization, called the Chaos Computer Club (CCC), purchased the device for $68 following a report claiming the Taliban had seized other U.S. military biometric devices.
- The device, known as a Secure Electronic Enrollment Kit, captures and stores iris scans and other biometric data for the U.S. military.
- It was shipped to CCC member Matthias Marx, who accessed the device's metadata without encryption.
- The New Tork Times verified that the data was for individuals from Iraq and Afghanistan, some of whom were known terrorists.
- It also contained data on local Afghans who assisted the U.S. while troops were in those areas.
- "It was disturbing that [the U.S. military] didn't even try to protect the data," Marx told the Times. "They didn't care about the risk, or they ignored the risk."

911 dispatch centers in Colorado have experienced an uptick in automated crash notifications from skiers' iPhones, placing a strain on ski patrollers. The iPhone 14 and newer Apple Watch models mistakenly identified ski falls as car accidents, despite a software update last month designed to optimize Apple's new Crash Detection feature. More: - The feature, unveiled with the new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and Apple Watch Series 8 this year, detects various crashes and automatically connects to emergency services. The call must be dismissed within 20 seconds.
- In Colorado, dispatch centers in multiple counties are experiencing a noticeable increase in 911 calls from skiers.
- For example, the Summit County 911 Center received more than 70 automated crash notifications last weekend. None involved an actual emergency.
- "We are not in the practice of disregarding calls," the center's interim director said. "These calls involve a tremendous amount of resources, from dispatchers to deputies to ski patrollers."
- Putting the device on airplane mode or disabling the feature altogether can prevent accidental triggers.
