What happened: The number of AI job postings in the U.S. grew significantly in 2022 over the prior year, according to Stanford HAI's latest AI Index report. In the U.S., there were 800,000 AI-related job openings last year. Washington, California, New York, and Texas are among the states where employers are increasingly hiring AI-skilled talent, though other states are catching up.
What the numbers say: California, home to Silicon Valley, had the most AI job postings last year at 142,154, followed by Texas with 66,624 and New York with 43,899. However, states with the largest share of AI postings compared to the total were the District of Columbia (3.0%), Delaware (2.7%), Washington (2.5%), and Virginia (2.4%). (See map below.)
More: Since 2019, California has seen a steady drop in its share of AI job postings, while jobs in Texas went up slightly. California claimed 17.9% of all AI job postings last year, down from a quarter, showing that AI roles are becoming more evenly distributed across the U.S.
Why it matters: Job seekers with specialized AI skills are in demand. While many jobs are in California, it appears they could have a greater choice about where they want to work.
