INTERVIEW: KARINA LONGWORTH ON NEW SEASON OF 'YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS' (Part 1)
On March 28, a new season of "You Must Remember This" launched. The 21-episode series titled Erotic '90s takes a look at the role of sex in movies and TV during the 1990s, featuring themes from Lolitas to sex symbols in politics.
The podcast is written, produced, and narrated by Karina Longworth. I had the pleasure of hearing from Longworth about this new season and what she's most looking forward to.

Shreya Sharma (SS): What learnings from past seasons of "You Must Remember This" are you carrying into the new one?
Karina Longworth (KL): "You Must Remember This" is a podcast about 20th Century Hollywood, and so in making a season about the 1990s, everything I've learned about the century leading up to this informs Erotic '90s, but particularly the evolution of film censorship from the late 1920s through the creation of the ratings system in 1968, and the evolution of those ratings. Erotic '90s begins with the MPAA attempting to rebrand the X rating as "NC-17," and then I track how that bungled rollout influenced sex in Hollywood film throughout the decade in ways that still have impact on movies today.
SS: As compared to the previous seasons, how was this season of You Must Remember This different for you?
KL: This season covers material that is more recent than most previous seasons, but the process of making the show and my approach stays consistent from season to season.
SS: What are you most excited about for this season?
KL: I'm excited for listeners to revisit (or watch for the first time) several movies which I think have been misunderstood or forgotten, including "Pretty Woman," "Impulse," "Sliver" and, of course, "Showgirls."
A personal note: Longworth has partnered with The American Cinematheque to feature weekly screenings on Tuesdays at the Los Feliz 3 in Los Angeles. Go, so I may vicariously live through you.
