| 1 | | Google is testing generative AI capabilities in its search engine through the addition of "AI snapshots" of key information at the top of search results. The experimental snapshots are responses to queries that draw from across the open web. More: - Google is experimenting with generative AI in Search to answer questions, generate summaries, and offer follow-up questions and links to relevant web content.
- Unveiled during I/O conference today, the new AI search capabilities are generated by Google's large language models, including PaLM 2 and MUM, and sourced from the open web.
- The AI Search is starting out as an experiment within Google's new Search Labs, where users can test it and offer feedback.
- To try out the AI snapshots, users have to opt in to a new feature called Search Generative Experience (SGE) as part of the Search Labs feature.
- Search Labs is now open for signups and available on Chrome desktop and the Google App (Android and iOS) in the U.S.
- The AI snapshots will launch to Labs users in the "coming weeks."

| 2 | | In addition to AI in Search, Google unveiled a number of other AI features during its I/O conference today. Here's the shortlist: - Google introduced PaLM 2, its latest large language model, which powers AI features across 25 different products and features. The model is the driving force behind Google's revamped Bard chat tool, which competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT. PaLM 2 now offers enhanced support for writing and debugging code, and a lightweight version can also run natively on smartphones.
- In another update, Google said Bard's responses now include images, and art generation and editing capabilities are being added through a partnership with Adobe. Bard can now assist with things like generating and debugging code and explaining code snippets. Google has made the chat tool available without a waitlist in English across 180+ countries.
- Google will launch "Help Me Write," a generative AI tool in Gmail that can write entire emails. The tool for Gmail on mobile is described as a "supercharged extension" of Smart Compose and can draw from previous messages for context.
- Also coming to Google Workspace are AI-powered automatic table generation in Sheets and image creation in Slides and Meet. Google also rebranded its generative AI tools across Workspace apps as "Duet AI." The features include Sidekick, which can read, summarize, and answer questions on documents across Google apps. Duet AI is not yet available to the public, though people can sign up to express interest in joining Google Workspace Labs, where organizations will be able to experiment with the new generative AI features.

| 3 | | What happened: An international group of doctors and public health experts has issued a stark warning about the potential negative effects of AI on human health. Details: Writing in the journal BMJ Global Health, the experts warned that AI could worsen social and health inequalities in healthcare by incorporating human biases and discrimination or reinforcing disparities in people's access to healthcare. Other concerns centered on data privacy and security, errors in AI that can harm patients, and existential risks to humanity. Why it matters: The warning is the latest in a growing chorus of concerns around AI safety, with experts calling for the technology to be regulated to stave off potential dangers. Geoffrey Hinton, the "godfather of AI," recently called for greater oversight of AI, and research has revealed hospital algorithms that are racially biased against Black patients. What the numbers say: Patients themselves are also wary of AI in healthcare. A Pew Research Center survey of 11,000 U.S. adults found that 60% said they would feel uncomfortable if their healthcare provider used AI for diagnosing and treatment. The poll also found that only 38% of respondents believe AI in healthcare would improve patient health outcomes. | | |
| 4 | | Meta is releasing a new multimodal AI model, called ImageBind, as an open-source tool. While still in the early stages, ImageBind acts as a framework for eventually creating complex scenes and environments from one or several inputs, such as a text or image prompt. More: - For example, if fed a picture of a beach, ImageBind could identify the sound of waves. Similarly, if given a photo of a tiger along with the sound of a waterfall, the system could produce a video of both.
- The model currently works with six types of data, which are text, visual (image/video), audio, depth, temperature, and movement.
- Its approach is comparable to how humans gather information through multiple senses and can relate inputs between the different data modes.
Applications: - Meta says the model gives machines a "holistic understanding" that links objects in a photo to their corresponding sound, 3D structure, temperature, and motion.
- While Meta hasn't released it as a product, ImageBind's applications could include enhancing search functionality for photos and videos or creating mixed-reality environments. Meta plans to expand ImageBind's data modes to other senses in the future.
- Meta's research paper on ImageBind is available here.

| A message from our sponsor, PUBLIC.COM. | | | Lock in a 5% Yield on Your Cash in Less than 30 Seconds Treasury Accounts are officially live on Public, offering a new way to lock in a 5.0% yield on your cash in literally seconds. (That’s significantly higher than a high-yield savings account.) It’s easy to get started. Once you create your Treasury Account, you can move your cash into the safety of US Treasury bills. As a Public member, you can now instantly invest your cash in 26-week Treasury bills. At the time of your deposit, you lock a fixed rate of return, backed by the full faith and credit of the US government. However, you also have the option to sell your Treasury bills at any time—even before they reach maturity. So, it's the best of both worlds: the high yield of US Treasuries and the flexibility of a savings account. Join Public | |
