The U.K.'s competition regulator is launching a probe into the AI market, including foundation models such as the software underpinning ChatGPT. The review by the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will examine the market surrounding these models and how they're developing, according to chief executive Sarah Cardell. More: - According to Cardell, the CMA will investigate "the actual opportunities there" and establish "guardrails and principles" to ensure that competition works effectively and consumers are safeguarded in the AI space.
- The CEO said the agency's probe of AI would be a "fact-finding" endeavor that will include many businesses, academics, and others.
- Additionally, Cardell said the review would not single out any specific companies.
Zoom out: - Meanwhile, regulators worldwide have been increasing their scrutiny of generative AI following last year's release of ChatGPT.
- Last week, EU lawmakers agreed on an early draft of its AI Act, which includes a requirement for generative AI companies to disclose any copyrighted material used to train their systems.
- The draft law is now advancing to the final stage, the "trilogue," which involves negotiating the bill's final details.
- Once finalized, the law would have a grace period of around two years for parties to adhere to the new rules.

What happened: The Biden administration is asking American workers to share how their employers are deploying AI in their workplaces. As automation becomes more prevalant, the White House is concerned that automated tools used to track and monitor workers can pose serious risks to their safety and mental health, as well as fuel discrimination in areas like pay and discipline. What the numbers say: Most Americans are apprehensive about using AI to monitor workers. A Pew Research survey from April found that more than 60% of U.S. adults opposed using AI to track employees' movements while they work; majorities also opposed AI to keep track of desk time and record what workers are doing at their computers. In other areas, such as monitoring the driving behaviors of workers on the job, those polled were actually more supportive. Why it matters: The White House is asking for feedback from stakeholders, including employers, advocacy groups, and researchers, to describe their experiences with AI at work. The comments could help the federal government decide which rules and regulations, if any, to introduce to tackle any harms caused by workplace surveillance tech, which is on the rise. | |

AI language models are being deployed to generate low-quality news content on ad-driven websites, also known as "content farms," according to NewsGuard. In April, the organization uncovered nearly 50 websites with content in seven different languages that appeared to be fully or mostly created using AI. More: - The sites are generally using OpenAI's ChatGPT to generate the articles.
- In many cases, the sites do not disclose their ownership and tend to feature content described as "clickbait."
- In News Guard's review, at least some of the content was found to be false. For example, a content farm called CelebritiesDeaths.com featured a story claiming that President Joe Biden had died.
- Many also featured trademark phrases from AI models, including "I cannot complete this prompt" and "my cutoff date in September 2021."
- NewsGuard warned that a new generation of content farms is on the way as a wider availability of AI content-writing tools opens up.
