OK, now what are the risks? Dark chocolate is high in calories, which isn't the end of the world, but it's important to remember that moderation is key. Perhaps the biggest risk on the list, according to recent research from Consumer Reports, is the high level of heavy metals cadmium and lead found in some bars of dark chocolate. Yes, lead. But according to medical toxicologist Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD, "there's no evidence that occasional consumption of dark chocolate is harmful to human health because of heavy metal exposure." If you're still concerned, you can limit your consumption and stick to suggested serving sizes. Do the pros outweigh the cons? That's up to you! They often overlap in changes in sleep patterns and energy levels, increased irritability, and issues focusing or concentrating.
