Today's Ingredients Earlier this year, Healthline reported that only 2% of the diet and nutrition trends on TikTok are accurate. To make matters worse, 57% of millenial and Gen Z TikTok users said they have been influenced by or have adopted nutrition trends that they learned about on the platform. Needless to say, there's a lot of BS nutrition advice floating around. A: "While I'm all for recipe sharing (in fact, most of my toddler's favorite meals have come from accounts I follow on social media), I wish people would stop sharing their diets online, especially celebrities. Not only are these diets often based on shaky (if any) science, but they tend to perpetuate the idea that eating healthy has to be restrictive, expensive, and complicated." — Kelli McGrane, MS, RD "That you need to eat a bunch of one macronutrient or barely any of another!" — Mohini Bhakta, MBA, RDN, CDCES "Anything on social media that isn't medically backed [by] experts in the field and credible sources!!! Just because your favorite celebrity posts about it, doesn't mean that it's true or that you should do it." — Leah Maschino, MBA, RDN "You have to stop eating XYZ to lose weight." — Jessica Sandoz, MS, RDN, LDN, CDCES "Bread = weight gain. Bread is not our enemy! If we have a sensitivity or an allergy, it makes sense to eliminate bread or products containing the triggering ingredient (gluten). However, bread alone does not cause weight gain and can be a part of a balanced diet, especially when choosing 100% whole grain. Unless there's a medical need, there can be a place for all foods in our eating plan.
