The Allen Institute for AI has compared its AI question-and-answer model Macaw with OpenAI's popular GPT-3 language model. The research institute, founded by Microsoft's Paul Allen, open-sourced Macaw last year. It is limited to answering and generating questions and providing explanations for them. More: - The institute recently published an online demo that lets anyone explore Macaw's answers to a benchmark set of questions.
- Those answers are then compared to GPT -3's responses.
- Macaw often outperforms GPT-3 even though it's an order of magnitude smaller, according to the Allen Institute for AI.
- Macaw contains 11 billion parameters vs. GPT -3's 175 billion parameters. More parameters generally equate to a more sophisticated model.
- To build Macaw, researchers trained Google's T5 transformer model on ~300,000 questions and answers.
- Macaw is publicly available for free.

The Pentagon's new AI office will launch its first operations on Feb. 1, according to Navy CDO Tom Sasala. The office will be led by the DoD's first-ever chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, who has yet to be named. More: - According to FedScoop, the role was created to help make sure that the DoD's "AI and data initiatives receive more attention."
- That person will report directly to U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks. He or she will be the top official responsible for AI, digital solutions, and data integration in the department.
- The officer will oversee and combine the efforts of the Pentagon's Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, Chief Data Officer, and Defense Digital Service.
- The three offices have so far experienced overlaps and inefficiencies due to their independent operations. Instead, they will all report to the officer and "create a tech stack" to integrate data, software, and AI.
