Researchers at Stanford performed a test for the potential recovery of lost capacity in lithium-ion batteries, increasing lifetime by 30%. The researchers claim to have discovered how to electrically reconnect dead lithium with the negative electrode to reactivate the battery, which they claim will have wide implications for the design and development of more robust lithium-metal batteries for applications such as electric vehicles. More: - Lithium ions move back and forth between a battery's cathode and anode and carry electrons across a battery in a current. Over time, ions become stranded and inactive, which causes the battery to lose capacity.
- The scientists discovered that by adding a high current discharging step right after the battery charges, the isolated lithium moves enough to reconnect with the anode, which reactivates the battery.
