Swiss Baselland Transport Nokia and Schweizer Electronics installed an AI-based threat detection system for the Swiss public transportation firm Baselland Transport AG (BLT). The Scene Analytics system uses computer vision and machine learning technologies for real-time monitoring and analysis to flag off a threat. More: - The 28 EU countries witnessed 250 fatal accidents and 300 serious injuries at level crossings in 2018.
- The Swiss authorities decided to implement an AI-based system to offset these safety risks as situations are dynamic, and one threat can be very different from another.
- The Scene Analytics system uses CCTV feedback to continually update its machine learning algorithms, which classify situations as normal or anomalous.
- The machine learning capability helps the system to self-learn and evolve, reducing the need for human intervention in updating the system.
- The system maintains a backup of event-based videos, images, and other relevant data for further analysis.
- Early threat detection helps Baselland to minimize downtime and delays, in turn improving its operational efficiency.

DeepWay Xingtu Pininfarina Shanghai, the Chinese arm of the Italian design firm, has developed a new semi-truck packed with autonomous technologies called the DeepWay Xingtu. The studio has equipped the self-driving semi with 11 onboard cameras, an infrared detector, five millimeter-wave radars, and a LIDAR sensor that supposedly helps achieve an over 0.61 mile (1 kilometer) ultra-long-range detection. More: - The truck has an all-electric motor with a custom-developed 450-kilowatt-hour battery pack that allows it to haul 49 tons of freight for up to 186 miles (300 kilometers) on a single charge, thanks to its low drag coefficient of 0.35.
- The battery can be replaced within six minutes through its quick-swap solution.
- The truck is equipped with Baidu's DeepWay autonomous driving technology for its Highway Intelligence System (HIS), which the company claims to be capable of "end-to-end autonomous driving."
- Although it's unknown when or if the Xingtu will be mass-produced, DeepWay intends to continue its R&D on semi-trucks with autonomous technology and electrified powertrains to "promote the commercialization of L4 autonomous driving technology" in China over the coming years.
