Elon Musk says Tesla's AI could play a role in the creation of Artificial General Intelligence, a hypothetical concept referring to a time when machines reach a broader intelligence that is roughly equal to humans. In a tweet, the Tesla CEO said the company's AI could contribute to smarter machines given that it "trains against the outside world," including with its upcoming Tesla Bot. More: - Tesla is now developing a humanoid robot, codenamed Optimus, that it says builds upon its work in AI and self-driving vehicles.
- The robot will reportedly be equipped with Tesla car autopilot cameras, a screen for displaying information, and a full self-driving computer.
- Musk has said he hopes to have a working prototype of the bot by the end of this year.
- In a tweet posted today, Musk noted that "decentralized control" of the robots is critical to ensuring that they don't go awry and turn on humans.
Zoom-out: - Last year, Musk said Tesla is arguably the world's largest robotics company because its vehicles are like "semi-sentient robots on wheels."
- It makes sense to convert this AI-driven knowledge into "a humanoid form," he added.
- The Tesla CEO has previously claimed that super AI is more dangerous than nuclear warheads, and machines will be as smart as humans in less than 10 years.
- In 2017, Musk said that "AI is a fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization."

Chinese researchers studied chatbots from Facebook, Microsoft, WeChat, and others and found that they exhibited low empathy and mental health issues related to depression and addiction. The researchers are concerned that the bots could negatively impact users during conversations, particularly minors and people facing difficulties. More: - The researchers examined Facebook's Blenderbot, Microsoft's DiabloGPT, Tencent's DialoFlow, and Baidu's Plato chatbot, asking them questions typical to a cursory intake for depression in people.
- The bots, which are trained to converse with people, showed signs of depression and addiction and scored low on empathy.
- According to the study, the bots were all trained on comments posted to Reddit, potentially explaining their responses.
- The preprint study from the Chinese Academy of Science Institute of Computing Technology was done in tandem with Tencent and its messaging app WeChat.

ICYMI: A machine learning system can monitor politicians' smartphone usage during government meetings and highlight lawmakers who are distracted. Belgian artist Dries Depoorters created the software program, called "The Flemish Scrollers," which uses AI to locate phones in live video footage and facial recognition to identify the lawmaker. It then tweets out names and clips of the distracted politicians. More: - The program, created in 2021, also displays the percentage of how distracted the video subjects appear to be.
- It was created in response to Belgian Minister-President Jan Jambon playing Angry Birds on his phone during a 2019 parliament session.
- Depoorters used the open-source software library Keras for the program's object detection and facial recognition capabilities.
- Given the artist's interest in privacy and AI, it's also being viewed as a commentary on surveillance AI and the implications of being constantly monitored by facial recognition.
