Computer chip brain implants were viewed as the worst AI technology for society in a Pew Research Center survey about the rise of AI. The center surveyed 10,260 U.S. adults about six AI "human enhancement" technologies, which were facial recognition, social media algorithms, robotic exoskeletons, brain chip implants, driverless cars, and gene editing. More: - Respondents were the most concerned about brain chip implants that could help humans process information faster.
- 56% said it was a "bad idea for society."
- On a personal level, 80% said they would not want a brain chip implant, like those being developed by Elon Musk's Neuralink, even if it was available.
- However, 77% said they would support brain implant in medical applications, for example, by restoring movement for paralyzed people.
- After brain chip implants, the respondents showed the most concern for driverless passenger vehicles and algorithms used to detect false information on social media sites.
- Facial recognition to detect criminals garnered the best response, with 46% of respondents calling it a "good idea for society."
- About 45% said they were equally excited and concerned about the rise of AI technology.

A digitally manipulated deepfake video of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the first to be used in an "intentional and broadly deceptive way," according to Sam Gregory of Witness, a human rights and technology group. The video has circulated on social media, showing an AI-edited version of Zelenskyy calling on Ukrainian citizens to surrender to Russia. More: - Hackers breached national news broadcast to broadcast the clip on the TV channel Ukraine 24.
- It later appeared on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, which have since removed it.
- According to Gregory, the deepfake isn't particularly well-made, and Ukraine did a "masterful job" in quickly refuting its legitimacy.
- Zelenskyy himself responded with a video calling the deepfake a "childish provocation," which has more than 8 million views across Instagram and Telegram.
- In early March, the Ukrainian Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security warned that Russia could use deepfake technology to create a video of Zelenskyy surrendering.

A ransomware hacking group used artificial intelligence to generate fake images for social media profiles, according to Google. The group, referred to as Exotic Lily, used the fake profiles to appear as legitimate employees so it could gain access to corporate computer networks. More: - Exotic Lily is known as an "initial access broker" that sells access to companies' networks to the highest bidder.
- The hackers used an unidentified and publicly available service to generate fake photos using AI, which were used in phony LinkedIn profiles.

- At its peak, Exotic Lily sent 5,000+ phishing emails a day to up to 650 organizations. It initially targeted IT, cybersecurity, and healthcare before expanding to other industries.
- Google also found links between Exotic Lily and the Russian-speaking ransomware group Conti. Exotic Lily is thought to be operating from Central or Eastern Europe.
