Netflix declined to pick up 20 Russian propaganda channels on its platform, in spite of local regulations. In December of 2021, Netflix was required to register with Russia's media regulator, Roskomnadzor. More: - In Russia, all subscription VOD services with more than 100,000 subscribers must legally register with Roskomnadzor, and stream 20 "must-carry" free-to-air Russian news, sports, and entertainment channels.
- These channels include several operated by the Russian Orthodox Church, and at least one -- the news-oriented Channel One -- that's believed to be aligned with the Kremlin and broadcasting propaganda on behalf of the government of President Vladimir Putin.
- Though it was suggested that the law would be enforced starting on March 1, it has not yet been fully implemented; HBO Max and Apple TV+ also operate in Russia, but have not yet been registered with Roskomnadzor.
- Netflix launched formally in Russia -- with local payments and a Russian-language interface -- just over one year ago; in 2021, the streamer greenlit its first Russian original drama series, a contemporary take on the Leo Tolstoy novel "Anna Karenina."
- YouTube responded to Russia's invasion of Ukraine by blocking the Russian news channels RT and Sputnik throughout Europe.
