Meta will add NFTs to Instagram "in the near term," Mark Zuckerberg confirmed. The CEO made the announcement while speaking at Tuesday's South by Southwest Festival in Texas. More: - Instagram plans to add the ability for users to display NFTs and potentially mint new ones, he said.
- Zuckerberg said NFTs will likely play a role in Meta's future metaverse — for example, by allowing avatar clothing to be minted as an NFT and transportable to different locations.
- However, Meta still needs to work out "a bunch of technical things" before that becomes a reality.
- "We're a few years off," Zuckerberg said regarding a functional 3D metaverse that users would access through AR/VR devices such as headsets.
- The update comes after top Instagram executive Adam Mosseri said the platform was “actively exploring” NFTs and plans to bring the tech to a wider audience.
Quotable: - At SXSW, Zuckerberg said the future "belongs to the people who believe in it more than others."
- "I believe that the metaverse is the next chapter of the internet," he said. "Just like we had the mobile internet, I think this is going to be the successor to that.”
- The metaverse will be driven by different user needs, according to Zuckerberg. "For some people, it'll be games, for some people it'll be productivity. One really interesting one that I've seen recently is fitness.”

European regulators signed off on Amazon's planned $8.5B purchase of film studio MGM, saying it doesn't pose competition concerns in the EU. The mega-deal still needs to gain antitrust approval from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. More: - In its investigation, the commission concluded that the deal would not significantly lower competition in European markets for movie/TV production or retail supply of "audiovisual services."
- Specifically, the European Commission found that Amazon and MGM don't have significant overlaps in their audio-visual content.
- The regulator found that MGM's content isn't considered a “must-have" and it doesn't rank among the world's top production studios.
- Amazon itself faces strong competition in the video streaming market, the agency concluded.
- If approved, the deal is expected to add more programming to Amazon's video streaming service. MGM has the rights to James Bond and other franchises.
