Apple could introduce advertising in its Apple Maps, Podcasts, and Books apps, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Apple has already tested ads in Maps that would show recommendations while searching for nearby businesses, Gurman writes. More: - Currently, Apple's App Store, News, and Stocks allow clearly marked ads alongside content. Apple's native Maps, Podcasts, and Books apps currently don't have ads.
- According to Gurman, Apple may start allowing businesses to pay for sponsored spots and to appear at the top of search results in Maps.
- The Podcasts and Books apps would work similarly, allowing publishers to pay for higher content in search results or for ads in designated app areas.
- Apple TV+, its streaming service, could also launch a lower-priced ad-supported tier, according to Gurman. Apple now has ads on TV+ for its “Friday Night Baseball” deal with Major League Baseball.
- The company is hoping to triple its ad revenue to double-digit figures, up from about $4B annually.

Unity Software has turned down AppLovin's unsolicited offer to buy the company in a $17.54B all-stock deal. Instead, Unity will move forward with its own plan to buy ad tech firm ironSource for $4.4B, according to the company. More: - On Aug. 9, AppLovin offered to acquire Unity at $58.85 per share -- a premium of 18% over Unity's closing share price the day before.
- However, it was under the condition that Unity would give up its existing agreement to buy ironSource, a mobile app monetization software firm.
- In a statement, Unity's board said AppLovin's offer isn't in the best interest of shareholders. It does not meet the criteria of a "superior proposal" to fulfill the exit clause in Unity's deal with ironSource, the board said.
- IronSource said it remains committed to the Unity merger. The deal would boost Unity's advertising tech and further its monetization efforts.

Bill Gates-founded TerraPower has secured $750M to further develop smaller-sized nuclear power reactors. The fundraise was co-led by Gates, SK Inc., and SK Innovation. More funding is expected from other investors. More: - SK, which invested $250M, is a part of SK Group, South Korea's second-largest conglomerate and one of its biggest energy providers.
- TerraPower called it one of the "largest advanced nuclear fundraises to date."
- The proceeds will allow TerraPower to advance its development of small modular reactors (SMRs), which are advanced nuclear reactors with about a third of the generating capacity of a traditional reactor.
- The company is working to commercialize SMRs, which would be produced in factories and delivered at sites to cut costs and avoid delays.
- TerraPower says it will also use the funding to develop cancer drugs using nuclear isotopes.
Zoom-out: - In November, TerraPower said it will build its first advanced nuclear reactor at a site in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
- The nuclear-design startup's experimental "Natrium" test reactor is set to begin operations in 2028.
- More than 70 commercial SMR designs are under development globally.

Microsoft says Sony's PS4 has sold twice as many units as its Xbox One. Microsoft doesn't report Xbox One sales but shared the update in court documents recently filed in Brazil. More: - In the filing, Microsoft admitted that Sony's PS4 has surpassed the One in both "console sales and installed base."
- Both the Xbox One and PS4 were launched in 2013.
- As of March 2022, Sony says its lifetime PS4 sales were 117.2 million, meaning Microsoft has likely sold fewer than 59 million Xbox One units.
- The filing was reportedly related to Microsoft's court case before Brazil's competition authority over its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
- For newer generation consoles, Sony had sold 17 million PS5s by the end of last year versus Microsoft's 10 million Xbox Series S / X consoles, according to Ampere Analysis estimates.

YouTube is developing a "channel store" for users to subscribe to individual streaming services through its app, according to the Wall Street Journal. The online marketplace, to be located in the main YouTube app, has been in the works for 18 months and could launch this fall. - Partner companies would likely share earnings from the platform with YouTube. Terms would differ for each company, according to the Journal.

- Amazon, Apple, and Roku also offer hubs to buy third-party streaming video services. The news comes as streaming services are finding new ways to gain subscribers in the ultra-competitive market.

Tencent Holdings, ByteDance, and other Chinese technology giants shared details about their algorithms with China's internet regulator. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has published a list of the 30 algorithms, including short descriptions of how they are used and classification numbers. It comes amid a broader government crackdown on China’s tech sector after a period of largely unencumbered growth. More: - The algorithms take in data to deliver personalized content, recommendations, and tailored services to users.
- For example, Chinese food delivery giant Meituan's algorithm estimates delivery times and matches orders with riders.
- Alibaba's Taobao app uses a recommendation algorithm to suggest products and services, according to the CAC.
- Others on the list included Tencent's WeChat, ByteDance's Douyin, Baidu, Weibo, and Kuaishou.
- China began regulating content-recommending algorithms on March 1. Under the new rules, tech giants must allow users to opt out of the algorithms and disclose algorithmic information with the CAC.
