Barlow & Bear Netflix filed a lawsuit on Friday against Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the creators of the Grammy-winning "Unofficial Bridgerton Musical." The streamer alleges the creators' company, Barlow & Bear, profited off of its intellectual property by staging a live performance of the musical at Washington DC's Kennedy Center. More: The suit alleges that the productions were never authorized by Netflix and represent "blatant infringement of intellectual property rights." The musical started life as a series of posts to TikTok following the debut of "Bridgerton" Season 1 in December of 2020; a number of fans had posted similar content based on the show's setting and characters. The Kennedy Center performance allegedly featured content that was taken "verbatim" from the series; tickets ranged up for $149 for the event, in addition to VIP packages. Another live performance has been scheduled for London's Royal Albert Hall. Producer Shonda Rhimes and original "Bridgerton" author Julia Quinn released statements in support of Netflix; Rhimes said "What started as a fun celebration by Barlow & Bear on social media has turned into the blatant taking of intellectual property solely for Barlow & Bear’s financial benefit." Barlow & Bear declined to comment on the lawsuit. HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
