The Labor Department reported that the U.S. added 528,000 nonfarm jobs in July, more than twice the number economists had expected. Average hourly wages were up by 5.2% YOY, higher than the 4.9% expected by a Bloomberg survey of economists. More: - July's job gains brought the total employment level in the U.S. back to its pre-pandemic levels.
- The unemployment rate dropped from 3.6% to 3.5%.
- Leisure and hospitality performed well, adding 96,000 jobs.
- Employment in the leisure and hospitality sectors is still 7.1% below where it was in Feb. 2020.
- The professional and business services sectors added 89,000 jobs.
- That sector has nearly a million more jobs than it did before the pandemic.
- President Biden praised the job numbers and noted that more Americans are working now than at any other time in American history.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán gave a headliner speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Texas yesterday, less than a week after giving a racist speech denouncing "race mixing" in Hungary. A senior Orbán adviser resigned after last week's remarks, calling it a "pure Nazi speech." More: - In the speech, Orbán presented the U.S. and Hungary as twin fronts in the war against globalists, progressives, communists, and "fake news."
- "A Christian politician cannot be racist," he said.
- Orbán has been celebrated by American conservatives, and his speech in Texas illustrates the American conservative movement toward the far-right worldview and policies promoted by Orbán's Fidesz party in Hungary.
- Orbán visited former President Donald Trump at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, before heading to Texas for CPAC.
- The non-partisan Freedom House group has said that Orbán's Hungary is a hybrid regime that is transitioning from democratic governance toward autocracy.

A message from WIND RIVER Can the VxWorks real-time operating system fill your embedded system needs? A real-time operating system (RTOS) is an operating system with two key features: predictability and determinism. In an RTOS, repeated tasks are performed within a tight time boundary, while in a general-purpose operating system, this is not necessarily so. Predictability and determinism, in this case, go hand in hand: We know how long a task will take, and that it will always produce the same result. - Determinism: Repeating an input will result in the same output.
- High performance: RTOS systems are fast and responsive, often executing actions within a small fraction of the time needed by a general OS.
- Safety and security: As RTOSes are frequently used in critical systems, such as robotics or flight controllers, they must have higher security standards and more reliable safety features.
- Priority-based scheduling: Actions are scheduled according to their assigned priority; the most important tasks come first.
- Small footprint: Versus their hefty general OS counterparts, RTOSes weigh in at just a fraction of the size: Windows 10, with post-install updates, takes up approximately 20 GB. VxWorks, on the other hand, is measured in the low single-digit megabytes.
In this webinar, we'll go through some of the features of real-time operating systems that can revolutionize your embedded development process, and make sure that an RTOS is the right solution for your use-case. Watch Now

GOOD NEWS: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will allow bison to graze on 62,500 acres of privately owned land in Montana. The land is owned by the American Prairie (formerly known as the American Prairie Reserve), which said that the decision will "benefit native wildlife, restore water quality, and will improve rangeland conditions in north central Montana." The BLM said that allowing bison to graze on the land will create jobs in the area. The decision will allow the American Prairie to expand its bison herd from 800 to 1,000.

The developer of a major oil pipeline connecting the Marcellus Shale field in western Pennsylvania to an export facility near Philadelphia pleaded no contest to polluting waterways and residential water wells in Pennsylvania. The Energy Transfer Operating firm agreed to pay $10M to restore watersheds in addition to promising to remediate contamination as part of its guilty plea. More: - The company's three Mariner East pipelines carry propane, ethane, and butane from the Marcellus and Utica shale fields to a refinery in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania.
- The Mariner East project has racked up tens of millions of dollars in civil and criminal penalties, and construction has been halted repeatedly by state regulators over alleged environmental contamination.
- Last October, the Pennsylvania Attorney General charged Energy Transfer with illegally releasing industrial waste at 22 sites in 11 Pennsylvania counties.
- Contamination from Energy Transfer's spills has contaminated the drinking water of at least 150 families across the state.
- Under the plea deal, affected families and residents near the pipeline will be able to request independent water testing.
