Alex Jones' texts have been given to the Jan. 6 committee by a lawyer representing two Sandy Hook victims' parents. The news comes after reports that his legal team had accidentally leaked many of his emails and text messages. More: - Jones has ties to the Oath Keepers militia, and the Jan. 6 committee said he played a large role in orchestrating the day's events.
- Leading up to Jan. 6, he spread multiple false claims about the Nov. 2020 election.
- The texts are said to include messages between Jones and Roger Stone, a Donald Trump ally and political strategist.
- Last week, a jury in a Texas court decided that Jones should pay $45.2M in punitive damages to Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin, the parents of a Sandy Hook shooting victim.
- The punitive damages were on top of $4.1M in compensatory damages awarded to the parents in a defamation case a few days earlier.
- During the trial, Jones' lawyers sent the texts to the plaintiff's lawyers, after having claimed during the trial's discovery phase that the texts were not on his phone.
- It's one of several cases Jones faces due to his controversial comments on the Sandy Hook shooting event.
- The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the deadliest in U.S. history, took place in Dec. 2012. A 20-year-old shooter murdered 27 people, including his own mother, before killing himself.
- Jones, the owner of the InfoWars website, had claimed in his radio show that the shooting was fake and that the government had used actors to enact the situation. During the latest trial, however, Jones backtracked on his previous claims, stating that he now believes the shooting was real.
- The plaintiffs said Jones' comments resulted in his listeners harassing them and other Sandy Hook parents.
