The number of AI and robotics research papers published in scientific journals has been growing exponentially since 2015, according to Nature. The papers were limited to those published in the 82 quality journals tracked by the Nature Index database. However, data from the Dimensions database also shows a similar rise in AI papers in other publications, as seen in the charts below. More: - According to Nature, the number of AI and robotics papers published from 2015 to 2021 rose so quickly that it resembled an exponential growth curve.
- During that time, the U.S. had the most AI and robotics papers in the Nature Index. U.S. researchers published 850 such articles in 2015, rising to 3,651 in 2021.
- The other top countries were China, the U.K., Germany, and France. China experienced the largest percentage change — 1,174% — in its annual share during that time.
 - Similarly, the number of AI papers published on the open-access repository Arxiv is also growing exponentially.
- According to Azeem Azhar's Exponential View, the number is doubling roughly every 23 months.
- Chinese researchers are generating 4.5x as many AI papers as U.S. researchers.

Microsoft announced Designer, a graphic design app with image-generation technology powered by OpenAI's DALL-E 2. Microsoft is opening up access to the Canva-like web app for free to users on a waitlist. To use the tool, someone can type in a text description of the image they want, and the AI will generate examples that they can add to their design. More: - In a news release, Microsoft said Designer invites users "to start with an idea and let the AI do the heavy lifting."
- Once a user chooses a design, they can customize it further using drop-down menus and text boxes.
- Designer can be used to create digital postcards, invitations, visuals for social media posts, and other designs.
- The technology currently suggests design ideas in PowerPoint. Microsoft is breaking it out into a separate Microsoft 365 app.
- Microsoft will roll out the limited web preview to the U.S. first. It will later add a version with more features to Microsoft 365 subscriptions and offer certain limited capabilities to non-subscribers in a free standalone app.
- The AI tech underpinned by DALL-E 2 is also being integrated with Microsoft's Edge browser and Bing search engine.
- Image Creator in Edge can suggest designs for social media posts and other content without leaving the browser.
- Bing will get AI image synthesis accessible through the Images tab or bing.com/create.
Zoom-out: - In 2019, Microsoft invested $1B in OpenAI, the AI research outfit. The company maintains an exclusive license to use OpenAI's GPT-3 text-generating AI.

Intel's AI chip startup, Habana Labs, has laid off about 100 employees, or 10% of its total workforce. Founded in 2016, Israel-based Habana develops chips optimized for AI applications. Intel acquired Habana for $2B in 2019. More: - In a statement, Intel said Habana periodically adjusts its focus and workforce "to continue and develop attractive and competitive products and solutions."
- As an independent unit within Intel, Habana had grown from 180 employees in 2019 to more than 900 employees this year.
- In May, Intel announced Gaudi2, its newest deep-learning training processor and the second-generation chip from Habana Labs.
Zoom-out: - The move may be related to broader layoffs by Intel that are likely to impact thousands of employees, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday.
- The cuts are attributed to lower demand for Intel's consumer chips following a substantial decline in PC sales after heightened demand during the pandemic.
- The company could announce the job cuts around the time it releases its Q3 earnings report on Oct. 27.
