Rep. Elise Stefanik clinched a second term as the House GOP conference chair, fending off a longshot challenge from a member of the House Freedom Caucus.
Stefanik, the frontrunner for the No. 4 spot, faced a harder-than-expected fight from Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), one of the House GOP's two currently serving Black members who pitched wanting to inspire younger and more diverse converts to conservatism.
Stefanik, who initially pledged to serve only one term in the role, is the highest-ranked House Republican woman, a title she snagged after she replaced Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as the conference chair. She's likely to be one of two women — the other being Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), who is running to be conference secretary — in a leadership team otherwise dominated by white men.
