Steny Hoyer, the House's No. 2 Democrat who has acted as a voice for the party's centrist wing, announced Thursday he would retire from leadership after nearly two decades in power.
"I believe that it is time for me, however, to continue my service in a different role. Therefore, I have decided not to seek elected leadership in the 118th Congress," Hoyer said in a statement.
After climbing the leadership ladder almost to the top during his 41 years in Congress, Hoyer said he decided to step down as fellow Democrats seek to empower a new generation. His departure will set off a scramble for the coveted leadership position, as part of a reshuffling of the caucus' top roles.
House Democrats' succession is still in flux, but Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) is expected to be the top contender.
