A group of programmers has sued GitHub, Microsoft, and OpenAI, claiming that the companies violated open-source licenses when using public code to train the GitHub Copilot coding assistant. Copilot is powered by OpenAI's Codex AI, an AI model trained on data scraped from web-based public repositories of code. More: - Leading the class-action lawsuit is programmer and attorney Matthew Butterick, who worked with Joseph Saveri Law Firm to investigate the case. The team recently filed the lawsuit in the District Court of Northern California in San Francisco.
- In a statement, Butterick said the suit challenges Copilot's legality and may be the first U.S. class-action case to call into question the "training and output of AI systems."
- According to the suit's argument, the companies infringed on the legal rights of programmers by scraping and using their code without proper attribution under open-source licenses.
- While Microsoft argues it is a case of fair use, some coders have noted some of its code outputs are very similar to what's available in their own repositories.
- Microsoft-owned GitHub argues that the training data was not intended to generate code verbatim; it claims over 99% of the output doesn't match the training data.

A Goldman Sachs report predicts that the market for humanoid robots could reach $154B by 2035, rivaling the size of the current electric-vehicle market. The financial opportunities of humanlike robots have been up for debate since Tesla revealed the first prototypes of its Optimus robot in September. More: - The bank believes a market size of at least $6B in 10 to 15 years is achievable to fill "4% of the U.S. manufacturing labor shortage gap by 2030 and 2% of global elderly care demand by 2035."
- In a so-called "blue sky scenario," GS envisions a market for humanoid robots of up to $154B by 2035.
- The investment case for humanoid bots is "sizable," Goldman Sachs concluded.
- However, hurdles still need to be overcome for mass adoption, including barriers to product design, affordability, and public acceptance, according to the prediction.
- Markets and Markets predicts the human robotics market will reach a smaller value of $17.3B by 2027
Tesla bot: - On Sept. 30, Tesla showed off two prototypes of its Optimus humanlike robot during its AI Day event.
- Optimus, which weighs 125 pounds and stands 5 feet 8 inches tall, will utilize the same chips and sensors as Tesla's self-driving systems.
- Customers will be able to order the robot "within three years" and "probably not more than five years," CEO Elon Musk estimates.
- He believes the robots will cost less than $20,000 each to produce.
