Soup slinging doesn't aid climate activism

Forty-six percent of respondents to a survey conducted by SSRS and published by the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media said that non-violent disruptive actions decreased their support for efforts to address climate change. Only 13 percent of the more than 1,000 people polled said these actions boosted their support, while 40 percent said these types of incidents had no effect. Views also vary based on political affiliation — as you might've guessed. Sixty-nine percent of Republicans said that these types of actions decrease their support for climate action, compared with 27 percent of Democrats. (Even Dems, though, were more likely to be turned off than energized.) The survey was conducted in late October, after a notable incident where two supporters of the group Just Stop Oil threw two cans' worth of Heinz tomato soup at Vincent Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" in a London art gallery. (The painting was unharmed , the gallery said.). "I was surprised, frankly, that [these events] played poorly not just with Republicans and Independents but even Democrats, according to our cross-tabs," Michael Mann, director of the center and a professor in the earth and environmental science department at the university, said in an email. Whether incidents like that change people's support for efforts to address climate change also depends on race, the survey found. For example, 52 percent of white people polled said such actions decreased their support, a view shared by only 31 percent of Black respondents and 41 percent of Hispanics. Despite the survey's results, Mann said, the takeaway isn't that activists shouldn't take part "in non-violent direct actions." He noted they "are an important way to impact public opinion." "But these need to be well thought out," he said.
