Breaking News: Jan. 6 panel approves 4 Trump criminal referrals to Justice Department

The Jan. 6 select committee is referring Donald Trump to the Justice Department for four potential felony charges, saying its evidence could support prosecution of the former president for attempting to block the peaceful transfer of power.

The referrals include recommendations that Trump face charges for insurrection, obstruction of Congress' Jan. 6 proceeding and conspiracy to defraud the United States, as POLITICO reported on Friday. The panel also contends that Trump conspired to make false statements by deputizing allies to sign certificates claiming to be legitimate presidential electors — a key part of his scheme.

DOJ, which is already pursuing a criminal probe of Trump's Jan. 6-related actions, is not required to consider Congress' referrals, which have no legal weight.
