Happy Sunday and Happy Holidays. I'm Rob May, CEO and Founder of Nova (yes that's new, more below). I'm an active angel investor in over 100 AI companies, and this is my last message to you from InsideAI. I've moved over to InvestingInAI, a newsletter I will write more deeply and sporadically. Below is info on my new startup, some old favorite posts, and some other stuff you may find interesting.
This original newsletter came about in 2015 when i started something called "Technically Sentient". It's crazy that some of you have been reading since then. I wrote 2x per month, and as I crossed 1000 readers Jason reached out to me and told me what he was doing at Inside.com, that they wanted an AI newsletter, and that he liked mine. I agreed to come over and Jason agreed never to censor anything, and give me full control. He lived up to his word and I deeply appreciate that. I took some shots at certain companies and occasionally wrote some controversial stuff and was never edited. Plus Jason and crew grew the email list to tens of thousands of users over time. It's been a great experience but, life is about growth and change and it's time to move on.

The folks at Ai4, the industry's largest AI conference, were nice to offer a discount code for my final newsletter. Sign up at this link and use discount code ROBMAY for 30% off if you want to go. I'll be there.

For work, I've started a new company, kind of. It's called Nova and the tech is actually spun out of Dianthus. Since the financing market for e-commerce acquisitions dried up with the declining macro environment, we decided to separate the company. We are taking the automation brain we built for performance advertising and making it a product anyone can use. Think of it as a control panel for hyperpersonalized generative marketing at scale. The tool can use generative media to spin up thousands of ad experiments that are super targeted, use ML models to insure everything stays within branding guidelines, and then optimize budgets across channels and campaigns that work the best. We've seen 70% improvements in CTRs and 150% improvements in email open rates using the tech. It's some of the most fun and interesting stuff I've ever worked on, so, if you want to try it out, please email me rob-at-novacloud.ai
The Inside.com link system has changed with the new community functionality so, finding a bunch of my old favorite commentaries was difficult. But here are a few.
My personal favorite, out of everything I wrote here, was the idea of AI defining a new Services As Software business model. I also think Why The Bot Economy Will Surpass the Human Economy is insightful. Horses, Bookstores, and AI Automation describes why I don't think humans will go out of work so soon. The Rise of AI Theater, covers some practical tips for making and selling AI tools. Then there is also the most controversial post I've ever written. (read it very carefully, it makes a subtle point). And Will AI Finally Make Us Happy? makes some good points about where all this is headed and the limitations of being a human.
I started this newsletter to cover the AI news and provide some real world commentary on what was happening, because it was lacking in the market. That's no longer the case, so I've decided to move on and let others do the AI news and context. My plan is to dig deeper, write more deeply at Investing In AI, focus on the podcast of the same name, and maybe compile some of these thoughts into a book.
I'm also launching the AI Innovators Community with a few friends, which puts together lots of local events to boost the AI ecosystem. If you'd like to start a group in your city (we have Boston and NYC covered already), reach out and let me know.
Thanks for reading all these years. I've learned a lot from our interactions, and appreciated all the feedback. I hope you'll go follow my new newsletter, and keep in touch if I can ever be helpful.
