This year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will take place in Las Vegas from Thursday, Jan. 5, through Sunday, Jan. 8. The world's largest yearly tech convention will show off the latest smartphones, laptops, desktops, chips, software, robotics, and more. This year's event centers on the themes of digital health, the metaverse and web3, sustainability, transportation and mobility, and "human security." More: - More than 2,500 exhibitors from 166 countries have signed up to show off their wares, including Google, Intel, Samsung, Canon, Nikon, Hisense, TCL, and others.
- The show's footprint is 70% larger than CES 2022, according to the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the show's producer.
- The conference expects to surpass 100,000 in-person attendees, more than in recent years but below its 180,000+ pre-pandemic peak.
- Some of the keynotes will be live-streamed, and speakers include AMD CEO Lisa Su, BMW Chairman of the Board of Management Oliver Zipse, John Deere CEO John May, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman, Fox Business Anchor Liz Claman, and others.

Technology employers cut more than 150,000 jobs in 2022, far more than the layoffs reported in 2020 and 2021, according to Layoffs.fyi estimates. The data tracker tallied roughly 80,000 layoffs in March through December 2020 and 15,000 cutbacks in all of 2021. More: - The 2022 figures included Meta's more than 11,000 layoffs, announced in November, and Amazon's estimated cuts of up to 10,000 employees that will extend into 2023.
- Both accounted for about half of the 40,000 layoffs in the consumer and retail tech sectors, which were the hardest hit in 2022, according to The Wall Street Journal.
- Education technology firms — which performed well during the pandemic as online learning boomed — saw more than 8,000 layoffs last year.
- Some executives acknowledged that they had grown too rapidly and overhired during the pandemic.
- In addition to layoffs, companies announced hiring freezes and general cutbacks amid a slump in digital advertising and tech product sales.
- Still, a ZipRecruiter survey found that nearly 80% of tech workers who were recently laid off found a new job within three months of launching their search.

Elon Musk's SpaceX is raising a $750M funding round that values the spacecraft manufacturer at $137B, according to a CNBC report. It's unclear how the commercial rocket company plans to use the funding. SpaceX plans to make its first Starship orbital launch in early 2023, followed by many test flights throughout the year. More: - Leading the round is venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which previously invested in SpaceX as well as Musk’s $44B buyout of Twitter.

- During all of 2022, SpaceX raised more than $2B, including a $250M round in July. The company was last valued at $127B in May.
Recent milestones: - Through its Falcon program, the company surpassed 60 reusable rocket launches last year.
- In October, a SpaceX Falcon rocket launched four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), where they will conduct 250 scientific investigations before returning to Earth this spring.
- It also owns Starlink, a satellite internet service that now claims over 1 million subscribers and continues to provide satellite internet service to Ukraine following the Russian invasion.
- Today, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried 114 satellites to orbit in its Transporter-6 mission, part of its smallsat rideshare program.

Google Voice, the company's virtual phone service, is now using artificial intelligence to identify suspected spam calls. The system draws from the same technology that Google uses to identify spam in its Android phone app. More: - Google says that AI already filters out billions of spam calls every month across its calling ecosystem to protect users from unwanted scams and more.
- For the new Google Voice rollout, users will see a label that says "suspected spam caller" on incoming call screens.
- It will also appear in their call history for future reference.
- Once users confirm the call as spam, Google will send all future calls from that phone number straight to voicemail.
- The company is rolling out the feature now, but it could take until Jan. 13 to reach all users.

Apple's Dark Sky weather app has officially shut down as of Jan. 1, 2023. The popular weather app was previously delisted from the Apple App Store in September and from Google's Play Store in 2020. More: - As of Sunday, the app no longer works for iOS users who installed it before it was delisted from the stores.
- Apple acquired Dark Sky in March 2020 and integrated many features into its first-party Weather app for iPhones, Macs, and iPads.
- The latest version of Weather now has hyper-local precipitation forecasts and alerts, high-resolution weather maps with multiple overlays, and hourly forecasts over 10 days.
- Apple highlighted the app's ability to generate a rain forecast for the user's block and notify when precipitation is expected to begin "down to the minute."
- iOS users wanting a third-party weather app can also try Carrot Weather, AccuWeather, Weather Strip, the Weather Channel, and the NOAA Radar & Weather Forecast app.
