Kevin McCarthy fell one vote shy of winning the speakership late Friday night on the 14th ballot, throwing the House floor into a state of open mayhem.
Two lawmakers — Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) — voted present on the speakership after previously opposing McCarthy. But four others remained opposed, leaving McCarthy short of the votes needed and dragging the historic speaker election, which has already spanned four days, further onward.
McCarthy has made a series of notable concessions to his conservatives flank, providing enough assurances to bring more than a dozen to support him earlier Friday. However, frantic lobbying of Gaetz and others on the floor during the vote were unsuccessful.
