Buttigieg to visit scene of Ohio crash scene Thursday

Buttigieg will receive an update from the National Transportation Safety Board on its investigation, which could take as many as 18 months to complete.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will travel Thursday to the site of a toxic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, according to a person familiar with his plans — 20 days after a 150-car train carrying oil and toxic chemicals derailed, setting the region on edge and stirring a national furor over rail and chemical safety.

Buttigieg had told reporters earlier this week that he would visit the village "when the time was right."

While in the eastern Ohio community of about 5,000 people, Buttigieg will receive an update from the National Transportation Safety Board — the lead agency investigating the crash — on its investigation, which could take as many as 18 months to complete.

Buttigieg has faced harsh criticism from conservative media and Republican lawmakers for his failure to go to the derailment scene sooner, as well as questions about the Department of Transportation's oversight of freight railroads such as Norfolk Southern. Buttigieg, in turn, has faulted the former Trump administration for rolling back a series of rail safety regulations, including one that would have required faster brakes on certain kinds of hazardous trains.
