Honda to produce hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles with GM / Rivian plans to lay off 6% of staff

Hey Insiders — Activity in the transportation sector is picking up. Here's the latest on Honda, Volvo Cars, Allegiant Air, and Rivian:

Nicolas

1. Honda announced its plans to produce hydrogen fuel-cell cars with General Motors. Honda expects to sell 2,000 hydrogen-fueled units by 2025 and 60,000 per year by 2030.

Q: There are an estimated ~700 hydrogen stations globally, and Shell began closing down its hydrogen stations in the U.K. in October. Do you think infrastructure will be able to scale to meet Honda's production plan? Share your thoughts.

2. Rivian is cutting 6% of its workforce (840 employees) to reduce its operating expenses amid competition from pricing strategies. The EV maker plans to focus on producing EDV delivery vans to fulfill its order from Amazon.

Q: Earlier this week, EV maker Arrival let go of 50% of its staff to extend its runway amid an increase in the price of materials. Do you think more layoffs will follow in the EV sector? Let us know.

3. The Department of Transportation is earmarking $800M to reduce road mortality, including road redesign and sidewalk improvements. The majority of the funds for the 500 assignations to regional and local projects stem from a $5B program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Q: What transportation infrastructure improvements need to be worked on in your area? Share your thoughts.

4. Our Next Energy raised a $300M Series B, which values the battery company at $1.2B post-money. The round, led by Fifth Wall and Franklin Templeton, is expected to fund operations at its $1.6B gigafactory.

5. Volvo Cars announced it will sell only electric vehicles starting in 2030. The automaker plans to bring six new battery-electric models to market by 2026.

6. Allegiant Air reported $52.5M in net revenue for Q4, a 390.3% increase versus the same period in 2021. The airline generated $74M in profit in 2022.

7. Volatus Infrastructure is planning to build an eVTOL vertiport at Bellefonte Airport in Pennsylvania that includes eight landing pads and charging stations. The company expects the vertiport to be available for operations this year.
