Microsoft today unveiled an updated version of its Bing search engine that offers a chat function powered by AI technology. The new Bing uses OpenAI's latest AI language model, which is "more powerful than ChatGPT." More: - Microsoft made the announcement during a surprise event today at its Washington headquarters.
- “It’s a new paradigm for search, rapid innovation is going to come,” CEO Satya Nadella said.
- The AI integration with Bing can chat with users and answer their questions in a conversational manner.
- It's also incorporating AI into its Edge web browser, according to reports.
- Microsoft's event comes a day before rival Google holds its own event about AI and search. The two tech giants are locked in an AI "arms race" as they seek to dominate the next era of computing.
- Apple is also entering the fray, as the tech giant is set to host its own AI summit in California next week.
Zoom Out: - In late January, Microsoft confirmed that it's making another multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI, and will continue to provide cloud-computing power to the AI company, which developed ChatGPT.
- The two firms have renewed their partnership, which will see them collaborate further on AI technologies and products.
- Nadella has said Microsoft plans to incorporate AI capabilities into "every product."

On Monday, Google announced Bard, a conversational AI service that's considered a rival to ChatGPT. Bard, an experimental AI technology, is opening to a group of "trusted testers" before a wider release to the public in the coming weeks. More: - Like ChatGPT, Bard can participate in online chats and answer questions in a conversational way.
- Based on Google's LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications, one of the company's large language models, Bard can reportedly draw from internet data to answer questions about current events and more.
- In a demo, Bard answered a user's query about the James Webb Space Telescope by supplying three bulleted answers.
- Google is using a version of LaMDA that doesn't need as much computing power, allowing it to support more users and take in feedback about the AI.
- “Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in a blog post yesterday.

Twitter had 180,000 paid subscribers in the U.S. as of mid-January, representing only 0.2% of its monthly active users in the country, according to a leaked internal document viewed by The Information. The numbers suggest that Twitter may need to ramp up its efforts to gain more subscribers in order to make subscriptions a viable revenue source. More: - The document also showed that 62% of paid Twitter subscribers reside in the U.S., indicating that it has 290,000 subscribers globally.
- According to The Information, the worldwide subscribers equate to $28M in yearly revenue, a small fraction of the $3B that Elon Musk wants to generate this year.
- In November, Musk told staff that Twitter needs about half of its revenue to come from subscriptions.
- Without significant revenue from subscriptions, "there is a good chance Twitter will not survive the upcoming economic downturn," he said.
Zoom Out: - In mid-December, Twitter relaunched its Blue paid subscription service, which lets individual users edit tweets, view fewer ads, and maintain the blue checkmark for verification, among other perks.
- Twitter may also charge businesses $1,000 a month for a gold verification badge.

Nintendo sold 8.2 million Switch consoles in the final three months of 2022, a 23% drop from the same time period the year before. The Japanese company has now cut its Switch sales forecast for its fiscal year ending March. It now plans to sell 18 million of the consoles, down from 19 million. More: - Nintendo said it cut the forecast because the Switch "did not perform as expected" during the holidays.
- Even with the drop in sales, the Switch still became the third-bestselling console last quarter, surpassing Sony's Playstation 4 and the Nintendo Game Boy.
- Since its 2017 launch, Switch has sold more than 122.5 million consoles, placing it after the PlayStation 2 (155 million) and Nintendo DS (154 million).
- Despite lowering its annual forecasts for hardware and software, Nintendo said it plans to raise salaries for Japan-based employees by 10% to boost its hiring power.
Related: - Nintendo also announced that its first Direct event will take place tomorrow, Feb. 8, on its YouTube channel.
- The company is expected to reveal more details about Switch games coming in the first half of this year, including "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom," due out on May 12.

Meta plans to release its next consumer headset in late 2023, according to Mark Zuckerberg. The CEO said the headset, likely called the Quest 3, will feature full-color mixed reality. More: - During an earnings call last week, Zuckerberg said the next generation headset will feature "Meta Reality," the company's term for color real-world passthrough technology.
- Unlike the Quest 2, the Quest 3 will have full-color mixed-reality features, meaning it can reconstruct a 3D view of the real world in color.
- Zuckerberg said the upcoming headset could "establish this technology as the baseline for all headsets going forward," and eventually for augmented reality glasses.
- Previously, Zuckerberg said he expects the Quest 3 to cost $300 to $500, similar to the Quest 2's price of $399 to $499.
- Meta launched its higher-end Quest Pro headset in October for $1,499.99. The collaboration and working device also offers full-color mixed-reality, as well as eye and facial tracking.
