| 1 | | The U.S. and European Union will soon release a voluntary "code of conduct" for AI, which other countries could adopt as a stopgap before permanent rules are in place. During Wednesday's Trade and Technology Council meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the allies agreed there's "fierce urgency" to adopt the code, which will be open to all "like-minded countries." More: - A draft is now expected "within weeks," said EU tech chief Margrethe Vestager.
- She expressed the importance of showing how democracies can deliver on AI rules, along with a desire to onboard as many countries as possible, including Canada, the U.K., Japan, and India.
- While details of the code weren't available, leaders stressed the need to get optional rules as China poses a threat and the technology accelerates at a pace "beyond belief."
- The initiative aims to address some of AI's risks while EU lawmakers work on comprehensive AI regulations, which will likely take until 2025 or later to come into effect.
- The EU's AI Act, which includes regulations on things like biometric surveillance and risk classification for AI tools, is still being finalized.
Zoom out: - The announcement comes a week after Google's CEO agreed to work with European lawmakers on an "AI Pact," which would establish voluntary rules on safe AI development.
- The G7 nations have also called for international technical standards to ensure trustworthy AI.

| 2 | | What happened: New AI technology being tested at some Amazon warehouses can scan products for damages before they're shipped out to customers, potentially speeding up picking and packing processes and cutting back on the number of returns. Why it matters: Currently, Amazon warehouse workers have to manually inspect items for damages, but it can be mentally taxing and time-consuming. Customers also list damaged goods as one of the top reasons for returning online products. What the numbers say: Amazon says the AI screening system, now operational at two warehouses, shows three times higher effectiveness at identifying damage compared to human workers. While fewer than 0.1% of items are typically damaged, Amazon ships around 8 billion packages a year, adding up to a significant amount for the retailer. The big picture: The move aligns with the broader trend of integrating AI and automation into logistics to speed up and improve complex supply chains. Amazon has led the way by incorporating optimization algorithms and AI-powered robotics systems at its fulfillment centers. According to Statista-provided data, the global warehouse automation market is projected to exceed $30B by 2026, doubling its value from $15B in 2019. | | |

| 4 | | AI app of the week: Roll AI What it does: The new app, for iOS and the web, uses cloud-based AI technology to vastly improve video production for creators, simulating so-called slider, dolly, and crane shots. Users only need an iPhone to create studio-quality remote videos up to 30x faster. Why it stands out: While there are plenty of video editing apps out there, Roll AI takes iPhone footage and uses AI to create simulated video effects from scratch, including movements that would typically require professional cameras and high-level post-production systems. Noteworthy traits: Users can also add AI-generated special effects, such as text overlay and studio effects like bokeh (background blur). Where to find it: Roll offers two intertwined products, a free iOS app where users can upload their iPhone footage to the cloud and a web-based app with a free trial to download and edit the footage. | | |

| 5 | | The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) has disabled its chatbot, Tessa, after it provided harmful advice to users. Initially, NEDA planned to use the AI wellness bot as a replacement for its phone hotline staff. More: - Tessa was trained on an eating disorder prevention program called "Body Positive."
- However, following activist Sharon Maxwell's negative experience with the chatbot, NEDA took it offline as of Tuesday.
- Maxwell shared on Instagram that the bot encouraged her to lose weight in an unsustainable way and engage in unhealthy behaviors, like weekly weighing and aiming for a daily calorie deficit of 500-1,000.
- NEDA is currently investigating the claims and has suspended the chatbot until further notice.
Zoom out: - In a 2022 study, researchers analyzed 52,000 comments provided by 2,400 users of an eating disorders chatbot in order to identify issues like glitches and inappropriate responses.
- They found that the chatbot's major issues were its general inability to understand and respond appropriately to unexpected user inputs.
