| Morning, folks! Lots of movement this week in ongoing stories we've been following here in the newsletter. The writers strike claimed a few more scalps, as production shut down on Season 2 of Paramount's "1923" AND UCP called it quits on plans for their big Apple TV+ sci-fi remake of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis." The studios have another week and a half to reach a deal with the actors or SAG-AFTRA could still jump in on July 1. Plus YouTube continued fine-tuning its misinformation policies. Just weeks after reversing a long-standing ban on election misinformation, the platform pulled a 90-minute conversation between presidential candidate RFK Jr. and podcaster Jordan Peterson, due to vaccine misinformation. Those updates and more in today's issue. Thanks for reading! Lon p/lon-harris | |
| 1 | | YouTube removed a video of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. speaking in conversation with podcast host Jordan Peterson. In a statement released on Monday, the company claimed the video was spreading vaccine misinformation, in violation of YouTube's terms of service. More: - Kennedy is seeking the Democratic nomination for President, largely on the basis of his anti-vaccine views.
- Specifically, YouTube cited its prohibition against "content that alleges that vaccines cause chronic side effects, outside of rare side effects that are recognized by health authorities."
- Both Kennedy and Peterson criticized YouTube for pulling the clip; Kennedy accused the company of interfering in the 2024 Election process.
- In the past, Kennedy has lost access to both his Facebook and Instagram accounts, also for violations of rules barring health misinformation.

- That ties Roku with NBCUniversal's Peacock among individual streaming platforms.
- Roku outperformed Paramount's Pluto TV, which had 0.9%; Fox's Tubi leads the free platforms with a 1.3% audience share.
- Streaming was the most popular way for Americans to access TV shows for the seventh straight month, with 36.4% of total viewing; that was up from 34% in April.

| 4 | | UCP and Apple canceled plans for a series adaptation of the classic silent sci-fi film "Metropolis." The big-budget series -- from "Mr. Robot" veteran Sam Esmail -- has been in development for several years, and was in pre-production in Australia. More: - UCP, the studio behind the series, explained that spiraling costs and uncertainty related to the WGA strike led to the decision to shut down the project, which had been in limbo for several weeks.
- UCP decided not to proceed with the series, and informed Apple TV+, which had ordered a first season last year.
- The series had been partially cast, and would have brought around 4,000 jobs to the Australian state of Victoria.

| 5 | | The writers strike claimed another series, as Season 2 of the Paramount+ "Yellowstone" prequel "1923" shut down production indefinitely. Season 2 was set to get underway earlier this month in Montana but has been postponed as the WGA strike continues. More: - The Paramount+ series is apparently paying $75,000 a month to use the Butte Civic Center through the end of the year, according to a report from Deadline.
- Creator Taylor Sheridan has a 2-season arc planned for "1923"; the series stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as members of the franchise's central Dutton family living in the Prohibition era.

| 6 | | Two of Twitch's top streamers -- xQc and Amouranth -- signed lucrative non-exclusive deals with rival platform Kick. The terms of neither deal have been made public, but according to Forbes, xQc will receive $100 million to stream on Kick non-exclusively for two years. More: - Though the deals are non-exclusive, Twitch's policies bar creators from cross-streaming between platforms.
- In another effort to make inroads against Amazon's Twitch, Kick is offering all creators a 95-5 revenue split, far better than its competitors' 50-50 split for normal users and 70-30 split for top talent.
- Kick is the latest project from Ed Craven, co-founder of crypto gambling site Stake.com.
