| 1 | | In the last fiscal year, GIC's five-year nominal rate of return slumped to 3.7%, the lowest level across the last seven years. Meanwhile, the Singaporean sovereign wealth fund reported a 4.6% 20-year real rate of return, its highest over the past eight years. CEO Lim Chow Kiat warned, "We are not out of the woods yet. The consequences of the policy tightening are still being felt in the economy and markets." More: - GIC's outlook for the remainder of 2023 is bleak, with the firm anticipating a global slowdown.
- The firm claimed that its cautious investment approach over the past year helped mitigate the impact of the market correction.
- GIC reportedly has nearly $690B in assets under management.
- 17% of its portfolio is invested in private equity and 13% in real estate.
- Most of its investments are in the U.S., accounting for 38% of its portfolio. Asia, excluding Japan, makes up 23%.

| 2 | | What the numbers say: In Q2 2023, VC funding for European startups declined to its lowest quarterly level since Q3 2016. European startups raked in €10.8B ($11.9B) in the second quarter, lower than the preceding quarter's tally of €13.2B ($14.6B). VC funding deal value dropped by 63.1% YoY in the first half of the year. Relevance: The funding pullback has severely impacted late-stage startup funding. But surprisingly they were able to increase their deal count share from 31.2% in Q1 to 31.8% in Q2. However, early-stage startups continue to nab the largest percentage share of European VC deals, taking in a 35.4% share in the recent quarter. Deal count for angel and seed startups continued its downward trajectory for the fourth consecutive quarter. What happened: U.S. investors reduced their participation in European VC deal-making by 69.2% YoY, joining deals worth €4.6B ($5.1B) in Q2. U.S. investors participated in just 18.7% of European VC deals in the recent quarter, further intensifying the VC funding slump for Europe. Where to see the impact: Q2 witnessed just 11 public listings, down 83.1% YoY. Meanwhile, acquisitions continue to remain the most popular exit route, with 299 such transactions for VC-backed startups concluding in the first half of this year. VC deal-making is not expected to pick up pace until liquidation opportunities improve. | | |
