| 1 | | China's regulations governing generative AI took effect on Tuesday, requiring AI providers to register their services and undergo security reviews before they're launched to the public. Beijing is also requiring labels for artificially-generated content. More: - According to the interim rules, AI-created content is also required to "reflect core socialist values."
- Data and models must come from legitimate sources, and providers are accountable for platform-generated content.
- The regulations offer service providers a three-month window to handle potential violations, a milder stance compared to the previous draft rules that proposed fines.
- Six government agencies, including the Cyberspace Administration of China, collaborated on the 24 guidelines, which are described as a balance between innovation and state control.
Zoom out: - Beijing has yet to grant official approval to any ChatGPT-like service.
- In China, AI chatbot offerings include Alibaba Group Holding's Tongyi Qianwen, Baidu's Ernie Bot, and SenseTime's SenseChat, which are all in the "trial mode" phase.

| 2 | | Prior to the November launch of ChatGPT, only 7.7% of LinkedIn users claimed AI skills, but within seven months, that number almost doubled to 13%, according to a LinkedIn report cited by Axios. Over the past five years, "Head of AI" positions among U.S. LinkedIn members have surged by 264%, the report claims. More: - Compared to January, the frequency of terms like "Prompt Engineering," "Prompt Crafting," "Generative," and "Generative Artificial Intelligence" in LinkedIn profiles has surged 15 times.
- Singapore, a global AI skills leader, saw a 20-fold increase in self-reported AI skills in June 2023 compared to 2016.
- In the U.S., there's a ninefold surge in workers reporting AI skills compared to 2016.
- LinkedIn's chief economist, Karin Kimbrough, told Axios that the spike in profiles citing AI skills is largely a response to market demand, driven by a 21-fold increase in job postings mentioning AI.
Zoom out: - In a newly released IBM study, 40% of surveyed executives believe their staff will require reskilling due to AI and automation adoption over the next three years.
- This could involve 1.4 billion individuals out of the global workforce of 3.4 billion, as per data from the World Bank.

| 3 | Google's experimental AI-powered Search will now summarize articles and other long-form content online, according to a company blog post. Google launched its AI "search generative experience," or SGE, earlier this year. It's currently an early-stage experiment but could one day roll out to all users of its search engine, which claims over 93% worldwide market share. How to try it: Users can currently test the serach generative experience (SGE), which summarizes search results using AI, by joining Google's Search Labs initiative. How it works: With the new "SGE while browsing" feature, users who click on a link to those results can now get an auto-generated summary of the article or web page. When the option is available, users will see "AI-generated key points" at the screen's bottom on mobile or in the desktop sidebar. It lists key points that link directly to referenced page sections. What else is new: An "Explore" section also generates questions answered by the article, along with links to relevant sections. First available on the Google app for Android and iOS, the "early experiment" feature will soon launch on the Chrome browser for desktop. What brands should care: According to Engadget, the new feature makes Google's AI-powered Search more like Microsoft's AI Copilot in Edge. | | |
| 4 | | Norway's $1.4T sovereign wealth fund, the world's biggest, has advised companies it invests in to adopt AI responsibly to enhance their profitability. CEO Nicolai Tangen stressed the importance of AI for all portfolio firms, calling it "potentially a massive driver for productivity and efficiency." More: - Tangen told Reuters that AI represents "a huge opportunity for companies and for society" but must be utilized in the correct way.
- According to Tangen, companies that don't pursue AI "would disqualify themselves as being complete morons."
- In a paper published Tuesday, the Oslo-based fund said AI will bring both opportunities and uncharted risks as AI spreads in the economy.
- Firms need AI expertise at the board level and must explain system design and training, it said.
Zoom out: - In April, Norway's wealth fund urged the world's governments to accelerate the approval of AI regulations.
- The fund, which is the single biggest stock market investor, is also introducing its own ethical AI guidelines for the 9,000 companies it invests in.

| 5 | | Michael Brackett, the founder of Centricity, a startup claiming to use AI, has been indicted for allegedly falsifying financial records to deceive investors. Brackett, arrested by federal authorities on Tuesday, has been charged with securities fraud and wire fraud. Prosecutors allege that Brackett falsified bank statements and revenue numbers to create a false appearance of success. More: - In 2019, Brackett secured $2.5M from angel investors for Centricity, a data analytics startup claiming to use AI technology to forecast consumer demand.
- Although Centricity claimed 13 major clients and $3.7M in annual revenue, prosecutors say only two were actual customers.
- Based on the false information, Brackett allegedly convinced an unidentified victim to transfer $500,000 to Centricity.
- The victim detected the scam shortly after and tried to reclaim the funds without success.
