| 1 | | According to Gartner, generative AI has reached the "Peak of Inflated Expectations" in its Hype Cycle. Gartner's Hype Cycle tracks the maturity of various technologies throughout their lifecycles. The cycle involves five stages: Technology Trigger, Peak of Inflated Expectations, Trough of Disillusionment, Slope of Enlightenment, and Plateau of Productivity. More: - Gartner added generative AI to its Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies for 2023, forecasting "transformational benefit" in the next 2 to 5 years.
- As per the cycle, current expectations for generative AI are at their peak, but they could soon drop off as excitement fades and it enters the Trough of Disillusionment.
- Gartner believes generative AI will reach the Plateau of Productivity in the next two to five years.
- Other tech expected to reach productivity in that time include AI-augmented, causal AI, and others.

More: - According to the Times, one of the tests involved asking Googe's Bard chabot about a scenario in which the user couldn't afford airfare to a close friend's destination wedding.
- In addition to life advice, DeepMind is also working on AI tools to teach users new skills and plan things like budgets and workout routines.
- As noted by the Times, it's possible that Google may never launch the tools to the public.
- Additionally, Google has been testing an AI tool that can write news stories.

| 3 | | OpenAI has acquired Global Illumination, a New York-based startup specializing in AI-driven creative tools and digital experiences. Financial terms of the "acqui-hire" remain undisclosed. The deal comes as OpenAI is seeking commercial success, aiming to increase its revenue from $30M to $200M this year and $1B next year. Background: Global Illumination was founded in 2021 by Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon, and Joey Flynn, all former employees at Meta Platforms. Global Illumination created Biomes, a Minecraft-like game described as an "open source sandbox MMORPG built for the web." Its team has worked on products at Instagram and Facebook and also made contributions at YouTube, Google, Pixar, and Riot Games, according to OpenAI. Why it matters: In a blog post, OpenAI said that Global Illumination's full team had joined the company to work on ChatGPT and other "core products" without elaborating. According to VentureBeat, the deal could signal OpenAI's pursuit of more multimedia features for ChatGPT or even a video-generating product as it aims to boost revenue. | | |
| 4 | | Snapchat's AI chatbot shared a self-generated video on the platform, triggering confusion and even fear among some users. Snapchat described Tuesday's incident as a "temporary outage" that has since been resolved. More: - The one-second video, which was the first "Story" the bot has ever posted, showed a beige background with a distinct color at the top, which some users speculated was a ceiling-wall corner.
- After posting the video, the chatbot temporarily stopped responding to user questions, citing technical problems.
- According to TechCrunch, the incident suggests that Snap may be working on a feature for My AI to post Snapchat Stories.
Zoom out: - The chatbot, built on OpenAI's ChatGPT, underwent improvements this year, including new safeguards and parental controls, after tests revealed inappropriate responses to messages from minors.

| 5 | | OpenAI's GPT-4 language model could shoulder some of the burden of online content moderation, alleviating the mental toll on human moderators who sometimes handle disturbing content, according to OpenAI's latest blog post. GPT-4's content moderation outperforms minimally trained human moderators but still lags behind highly trained human moderators, according to OpenAI. More: - OpenAI said its content moderation system, based on GPT-4, covers multiple content moderation stages, including policy development and actual content removal.
- According to OpenAI, GPT-4 speeds up the process of creating a new policy for moderation from months to hours.
- Changing guidelines require extensive human training, whereas language models can quickly embrace new policies, it said.
- Since tech giants like Meta, YouTube, and TikTok already use AI for content moderation, OpenAI's tech could benefit smaller resource-strapped firms.
- "You don't need to hire tens of thousands of moderators," OpenAI head of safety systems Lilian Weng told Axios.
Related: - Separately, AI-powered digital content moderation startup Hive AI is looking to raise $200M in fresh funding.
- The San Francisco-based startup, which customers identify and block unwanted content, is targeting a valuation close to $4B, nearly twice its prior valuation of $2B in 2021.
