| 2 | | What happened: By the end of the decade, nearly 30% of the currently worked hours in the U.S. economy could be automated, according to a McKinsey Global Institute report titled "Generative AI and the future of work in America." By the numbers: Automation driven by generative AI is transforming the labor market. Without generative AI, automation was projected to impact 21.5% of work hours by 2030, but since its introduction, the share has risen to 29.5%, according to McKinsey. Why it matters: With generative AI tools like ChatGPT coming out, the timeline for automation adoption could be sharply accelerated, particularly in areas like STEM and education. Rather than causing widespread job elimination, however, the report suggests that generative AI is more likely to enhance how professionals in the STEM, creative, business, and legal fields work. The most significant impact of automation overall is expected in job categories like office support, customer service, and food service, which could continue to see declines. The bigger picture: Overall, McKinsey estimates that around 12 million occupational transitions may be required by 2030, requiring changes in workforce development and more inclusive hiring approaches in the U.S. | | |
