| 1 | | Artwork generated solely by AI, without any human involvement, cannot be protected by copyright under U.S. law, a U.S. district court judge has ruled. Friday's ruling from Judge Beryl Howell affirmed a prior decision by the U.S. Copyright Office. More: - The Copyright Office in March rejected an application from computer scientist Stephen Thaler to register a piece of 2D art generated with his AI-powered "Creativity Machine."
- Thaler, CEO of Imagination Engines, filed a lawsuit against the office after his application to copyright the AI-generated artwork titled "A Recent Entrance to Paradise" was rejected.
- In her decision last week upholding the denial, Howell said, "human authorship is a bedrock requirement of copyright."
- However, Howell also acknowledged that humanity is nearing "new frontiers in copyright as artists put AI in their toolbox."
Zoom out: - In response, Thaler's attorney said they plan to appeal.
- He said copyright is designed to benefit the public by "promoting the generation and dissemination of new works, regardless of how those works are made."

| 2 | | According to a recent Gallup survey, 72% of chief HR officers at Fortune 500 firms believe AI will replace roles at their company within the next three years. The takeaway: When asked how AI could improve employees' performance, HR leaders cited improved efficiency, effectiveness, speed, better decision-making, and more opportunities for strategic thinking. Leaders are optimistic about AI's potential and are willing to use it, even if it means eventual job cuts, according to Gallup. The research organization said employees would be "blindsided" by AI unless leaders offer support and communicate about their AI vision. While Gallup data hints at likely employee backlash, education and reskilling for departing employees could mitigate reputational risk, it said. Still: Previous Gallup surveys show employees aren't prepared for the AI transition. Despite the recent emergence of AI tools like ChatGPT, only 14% of workers foresee their jobs being eliminated due to AI or similar technologies within the next five years, slightly up from the 2019 figure of 13%. Meanwhile, a mere 10% of workers polled said they use AI technologies at least once a week, while seven in 10 said they never use AI. More than 50% said they aren't prepared to work with AI, robotics, and other advanced tech, while a quarter said they aren't prepared at all. Q: Do you think many employees will be blindsided by AI?
